1v1 Defending (20 mins)

Organization:

-make 2 grids, side by utilizing as much space as possible; Trio make them 20x10 yards, OSA they can be 25x15 yards.

-divide players into 2 coloured groups, the servers can be defenders waiting to move to their line.

-server knocks the ball into the attacker, as the ball travels, the defender closes space and they play 1v1 to the goal in the corner; attacker must dribble through the goal at first.

Progression:

- Players are now able to shoot(addd goalie)/pass from distance to score, forcing defenders to close quicker.

Coaching Points:

All defending key factors:

-Speed and Angle of Approach, distance, Eye on Ball, Prevent forward play (Delay/Pressure), Balance (Body Position), Threaten Ball (Do not dive in).

Small Group Defending (25 mins)

Organization:

-same set up as previous

-Start with a 1v2 where the server comes out as 2nd defender and works with with 1st defender against 1 attacker.

-Players must communicate who has ball and which way to force the attacker (preferably away from goal, to the outside.

Progression:

-2v2

Coaching Points:

-All of the defending key factors; plus:

Principles of Play - Defending

-Pressure/Delay -- Stop forward progress of the ball

-Support/Cover -- Angle of 2nd defender, prevent the split, drop then tuck-in when ball is passed

-Compactness -- Stay together, don't get split

Small-Sided Game (20 mins)

Organization:

-set up half the field as shown; divide players into 2 teams; make 2 small goals if you have 1 GK.

-line up the group in a formation that is balanced and conducive to field size; at Trio on a half pitch it may be difficult to do this. I suggest a 4-goal game, with extra players as neutrals on the outside or make 3 teams and have one rotate in every 3-4 minutes.

Coaching Points:

-Focus on Defending Principles and Key Factors listed in the previous activities.

-Coach 1 team at a time/per 3-4 minute game.
