Warm up

First pass is a (SHORT) pass to the player B

Second pass is a (SHORT) pass back to player A.

Third pass is a (LONG) pass down to player C.

Player A follows pass , and short, short, long patter repeats.

Coaching points: Proper passing technique both on the short and long pass.

Screen 2

Organization:

1. Half field set up as shown

2. 13 players (12 attackers, 1 GK) set up as shown

3. Lots of balls

Instructions:

1. Players work in their groups and recycle to the same line

2. The activity starts with player 1 dribbling out and shooting from distance

3. After the shot, player 2 passes to player 1 who sets player 2 to shoot

4. Player 3 then dribbles down the line and crosses for players 1 and 2 who make runs into the penalty area

5. The next players in line repeat the process

6. Play for a set amount of time and then rotate the players starting positions

Coaching Points:

1. Angle of approach – off center

2. Head up to observe your target area

3. Head down at the point of contact

4. Non kicking foot placed to side, slight behind the ball

5. Contact ball – middle above the mid line

6. Pull hips round to face the target at contact

7. Body weight forward chest and knee over the ball at contact

8. Follow through is controlled

Progressions:

1. P – Add one central defender

2. P – Add full back to crossing side

Conditioned Game (25 mins)

Organization: Half field, use cones to mark out channels (width of 18)

Two mini goals, at the end of each channel.

6v.5+GK

Instructions:

Regular game, but like the main activity, the attacking team must play from one channel to the other before going to goal.

Anybody on the attacking team can go into the channel, but the restriction is only one player per team can be in the channel.

The opposite winger does not have to be set in the channel can join in the attack like a regular game.

Depending on the level of your players, you can have "set" positions, where the wide players must stay in the channel at all times.

Only 1 defender allowed in each channel at a time.

Attacking team scores by scoring on the big goal, defending team scores by "clearing" into the mini goals.

Coaching Points:

Same as the main activity.

Focus more on space (running into space, moving to clear space, passing into space, etc) because of the bigger playing area.

Try to make the players understand, that moving the ball side to side slowly does not achieve results because it gives the defense time to shift and get set.

Moving the ball from side to side is to try and create gaps in the defense and different points of attack to exploit the defense.

Progressions:

Again simple touch restrictions can be put in place to really force the players to move the ball quickly, but more for advance players, because again this is a possession session, objective is to keep the ball/be patient.

Regression - not allow the defense to go into the channels, but make a touch max. on the wide player because no pressure is allowed.

Game (20 mins)

Organization:

Half field, use cones to mark out channels (width of 18)

Two mini goals on the each corner of the half.

6v.5+GK

Instructions:

Free play.

Coaching Points:

Focus on more interchanging parts and movement.

Width to create space for yourself and/or teammates.

Body shape, opening up to space/field, receiving the ball with proper foot depending on what you want to next, etc.
