2003GB Defending as a Unit

-Aim: develop understanding of how to defending effectively as a unit. Specifically looking at communication and the defnding principles of play.

Duration of session: 1 hour 30 minutes

Number of players: 14

Equipment: balls, 2 sets of pinnies, 2 large goals, cones, whiteboard and pen

Facility: Cirby grass field

Arrival Activities (0-5 minutes): Juggling - can you reach 10 juggles

Warm up (25 mins)

Set Up

-As above make sure 10-15 yards apart

Activity:

-FiFA 11+

-Players pass the ball to there right. Once players pass the ball they move to the line on their left.

-The player opposite the receiver presses the ball adopting the appropriate individual defending position. Once completed the player just joins the back of the line.

-Progress: rotate direction

Dosage:

Intensity: medium to high

Time per set: 90 seconds

Reps: 6-10

Sets: 4-6

Rest: 45-60 seconds each set

Coaching Points:

-Banana run to cut of angle

-Fast, slow, get low (body shape)

-timing of pressure

Defending when organized: Communication (30 mins)

Set Up:

-15 x 20 yard area

- with end lines as shown

Activity

-4 v 4

-One team defends for around 10 reps while the other team attacks.

-Game begins by the defending team passing the ball to the attacking team.

-Attacking team pass and move the ball to the end zone

-Defending team are looking to win the ball and transition to the opposite end zone.

-Goals are scored by team getting the ball to the end zone (pass or dribble in).

Progress:

- The coach feeds the ball from the centre to either team. This means the defending team has to react quickly and become organized. Play is now unpredictable.

-Same scoring system, goals are scored at the end line.

Dosage:

Intensity: medium to high

Time per set: 3 minutes

Reps: 6-10

Sets: 4-6

Rest: 1 minute seconds each set

Coaching Points:

-Engage quickly.

-Communication: Someone should take charge of the defensive line.

-Organisation for Pressure, cover, support and depth.

-Keep a clean sheet.

SSG (30 mins)

Set up:

-25 x 45 yard area - with field in two halves as shown as shown above

-7 v 7 (including GKs)

-4 defenders, 2 offensive players.

Activity:

-The 2 attackers always stay in the attacking half of the field.

-2 outside backs are allowed to enter the attacking half of the field when in possession of the ball. -Once possession is lost they must recover into the defensive back 4 (defensive half of the field).

Progress:

Remove the restriction and free play game. 7 v 7

Dosage:

Intensity: medium to high

Time per rep: 4 minutes

Reps: 6

Rest: 1 minute seconds each rep

Coaching Points:

-Engage quickly.

-Communication: Someone should take charge of the defensive line.

-Organisation for Pressure, cover, support and depth.

-Keep a clean sheet.

-timing of support

-Full backs to recover quickly and get organised quickly after transition from offense to defence.
