WU (15 mins)

SET UP:

Set up an area an appropriate size for the number of players. Scatter gates around the area.

1) Players have a ball each and have to move around the area using sidesteps, keeping the ball in their hands to begin with. Trying to move through as many gates as possible.

2) Players move through gates but now bouncing the ball and catching at same height. Power of the bounce should increase.

3) Players rotate the ball around the body, ensuring both hands touch the ball when changing hands. Then rotate ball while moving through the gates. 4) Players place the ball on the floor and move it with their hands through their legs to make a figure of eight.

KEY POINTS:

* Ensure the 'W' position of the hands when holding the the ball

* Sideways movement, feet should move at the same time to ensure balance. No heels clicking together.

* Eyes on the ball at all times

POTENTIAL PROGRESSIONS:

Competition - Who can get through most gates/complete most bounces and catches/rotations around body.

T1 (20 mins)

SET UP:

Same area as the warm up. Players deliver the ball to their partners with a variety of deliveries and catches through the gates, moving to different gates after the delivery.

1) Bowling throw with a scoop catch to receive.

2) Javelin throw with a basket catch to receive.

3) Overarm/Sidearm throw with a 'W' catch to receive.

KEY POINTS:

* Good 'Set/Start' position - Feet shoulder width apart, weight slightly forward and heels raised (on toes) but not bouncing.

* Movement with the feet to get in line with the ball to make the catch.

* Use of the 'W' shape, thumbs together, little fingers together when making the catches.

* Eyes on the ball at all times

POTENTIAL PROGRESSIONS:

* Competiton between partners to make the most successful catches and throws. Deliver the ball with the feet to increase difficulty.

* If different coloured gates coach can shout a colour order (ie red, blue, yellow) and have to deliver through the gates in order.

T2 (20 mins)

SET UP:

Goalkeepers working in pairs to try and deliver through the gates to each other. This time one team can block the gates or try to intercept the ball as it is travelling.

KEY POINTS:

* Good 'Set/Start' position - Feet shoulder width apart, weight slightly forward and heels raised (on toes) but not bouncing.

* Movement with the feet to get in line with the ball to make the catch.

* Use of the 'W' shape, thumbs together, little fingers together when making the catches.

* Eyes on the ball at all times

* Awareness of position of blockers and quick movements away into a space.

* Blockers quick movement towards ball to intercept

POTENTIAL PROGRESSIONS:

* Points system for successful passes/interceptions. 1 point for a save, 2 points for a catch.

* Team who loses the ball becomes the blockers.

* After a save the GK has to deliver to a different player to the one they received from.

* 5v3 possession game but still need to deliver the ball through the gates.

CG (20 mins)

SET UP:

Two teams are organised and are tasked with passing the ball to each other using goalkeeper hand distribution. If the team can make a successful pass through a gate, they score a point. Opposition is able to dispossess by intercepting. Two balls in play to begin.

KEY POINTS:

* Good 'Set/Start' position - Feet shoulder width apart, weight slightly forward and heels raised (on toes) but not bouncing.

* Movement with the feet to get in line with the ball to make the catch.

* Use of the 'W' shape, thumbs together, little fingers together when making the catches.

* Eyes on the ball at all times

* Awareness of position of opponent and quick movements away into a space.

* Opponent quick movement towards ball to intercept

POTENTIAL PROGRESSIONS:

* Alter the size of the gates

* Alter type of pass (rolled/thrown/bounced)

* Alter number of balls in play

SSG (25 mins)

SET UP:

2v2/3v3/4v4 Game with goalkeepers. Rotate the goalkeepers at regular intervals.

KEY POINTS:

* Set position to prepare for the shot

* Movement to get in line with the ball

* Use and recognition of GK area where the ball can be handled

* Encourage frequent shooting from outfield players to get lots of repetition of handling
