Warm-Up

Organization:

30x30 yard grid

3 pinnies

2 balls (extras on outside of grid)

Instructions:

3 Players start off as defenders holding a pinnie each in there hand.

Defenders must look to simply touch a ball or force a ball out of play via a bad pass/touch from an attacker, if they do this the attacker who lost possession takes the pinnie and becomes a defender and the previous defender becomes an attacker.

Attackers must help each other to keep possession of both soccer balls.

Coaching Points:

Communication

Awareness of space/pressure etc.

Try to play to back foot and turn to switch ball in other direction when receive it if possible

Quality/weight of passes.

Angles/distances of support

Speed of play

Can you combine or switch play to releive pressure

Constantly re-evaluate your position (can I be in a better position?)

Progressions:

Simply add/remove balls/defenders until have the correct balance between challenge/success

Technical

Organization:

10 x 30 yard area with 2 x 5 yard area either end, set up as shown

Players work in teams

One ball per team

Instructions:

Players must look to drive the ball into their partner’s area

Their partner must attempt to control the ball without leaving their area

If the ball lands in the box, the player that hit the driven ball gets a point

If the receiver can control the ball inside the box with 1 touch, they also receive a point

Coaching Points:

Angle of approach

Head up to observe target

Placement of non-kicking foot

Hitting ball slightly off center – opposite to kicking foot

Body weight over ball (this is effected by placement of non-kicking foot)

2nd knuckle of big toe

Progressions:

P – Increase service distance

P – Reduce controlling area

R – Reduce service distance

Technical Variation

Organization:

40 x 30 yard area set up as shown

Groups of 4

1 ball per group

Instructions:

Player A passes a ball to player B and continues in the direction to go behind player D.

Player B controls the pass and plays to player C.

This rotation continues

Make this into a competition. First team to make 10 passes wins.

Coaching Points:

Non-kicking foot placed on the side of the ball pointing at the target

Head up observe target

Working on driven pass: use 2nd knuckle of big toe on kicking foot, toe down, ankle locked

Strike through the middle of the ball

Follow through the pass to target with passing foot

Weight and accuracy of Pass

Progressions/Regressions:

R/P - Shorten/Increase distance

Semi Opposed

Organization:

40 x 30 yard area - divided with central channel as shown

3 teams of 4 players

Plenty of soccer balls

Instructions:

Light blue team is defending and can move anywhere in the central area

White and dark blue team are looking to complete driven passes to each other to score a point

If the light blue team intercept the ball, they can immediately shoot on either goal

Rotate each team in to defending channel

All passes must be played below head height

Coaching Points:

Look for gaps between players

Movement off the ball to get open

Technical application - 2nd knuckle, following through to target to generate enough power to get across

Progressions:

Play with limited number of balls, once the defending players shoot on goal, that ball is dead. Players now work in bigger groups and look to pass to create opportunity to penetrate

Game

Organization:

40 x 30 yard area - 5 yard areas marked in corners as shown

2 teams

Plenty of soccer balls

Instructions:

White team play into either target player before scoring a goal

Ball starts from defender for any restart

Target player has maximum of 3 touches

Rotate target players after set time

Coaching Points:

Team shape - 3 lines of attack (def, mid, for)

Technique of driven pass to target player

Runs in the box

Progressions:

P - Limit touches

R - Add midfield line - 2v1 in each half to allow player to get on the ball to drive to target
