Passing + Receiving with a Shadow

Organization:

30 x 30 circle (size depending on numbers)

Players evenly split

Half of the players around the outside of the circle

The other half on the inside, checking in and out

Instructions:

1. Players in the center with the ball must try to find an open outside player to pass the ball to.

2. Players on the outside must receive the ball, by flicking up and into their hands. After flicking the ball up, the outside players must toss the ball back to the original person who passed them the ball. Aiming for their - foot, thigh or chest area.

3. Once players in the middle control the ball properly and bring it down to their feet they must quickly find a new player to pass the ball to.

Coaching Points:

1. Body Shape - Side body shape; Using arms to feel the defender; Low center of gravity (knees bent; expand body area). Ready to receive the ball in the air or closer to the ground.

2. Approach - Creating space: movement away from the ball; Checking in: movement towards the ball; Awareness: Can we take the ball on our front/back foot to play the next ball quicker; Ball furthest from defender, if there is a defender, body in between.

3. Surface technique - Inside surface of the foot, Thigh, Chest, etc. Making sure our body is in line with the ball.

4. Awareness - Timing and quality of pass; Timing of movement away/toward ball; Recognizing where the ball is going to fall.

5. Execution of activity - Quickly moving with the ball after receiving.

Passing Combinations (aerial) to SemiO (25 mins)

Diagram:

Progresses Left to Right

Organization:

15 x 20

3-5 Players

1 Ball

Instructions:

(As shown in diagram - focus on blue grid, far right)

1. Five players extra behind where the ball starts

2. Ball starts off with one of the end players, passing it into the closest supporting player in the middle, receives the ball back and finds players D.

3. The target player (D) on the far end looks to combine with his/her closest supporting player on a give and go, as player A follows his/her pass and defends.

4. Player D quickly plays a long ball to player B, who has followed his/her pass and taken the target spot, and player D defends. Player A becomes supporting player, after defending.

5. Pattern repeats. All long balls are flighted  in the air.

Coaching Points:

1. Quality of first touch/passing

2. Communication

3. Tempo - increase/decrease with number of touches we take

4. Placement of pass to back-foot or closest foot to open up/play the next ball

5. Angle of support from the 2nd Attacker.

6. Second player supporting - Recognizes where the 1st supporting option is on the field, and makes sure he/she is on the opposite side, presenting the player with the ball two different options.

Progressions:

(P1) - Add defenders in to encourage players to own space / check to and away from pressure.

4 v 3 with Recovering Midfield

Organization:

Full field (with expanded widths)

Divided into thirds, as shown

Total: 7v7

Outside Midfielders playing in the flanks

1 Ball (Restarts with Coach)

2 Goals

Instructions:

1. 2v3 in the Attacking third

2. Defenders must regain possession and play to the outside midfielders in the middle third.

3. On transition, midfielders may attack in the final third down the flank. IF they combine with the forward or center-mid in the box through a give and go they may enter the box as well.

4. If the midfielders defense is under pressure and is looking to regain possession, they must come back to support/help mark another player to create balance.

5. If a team shoots and misses, they player who shot the ball must go retrieve it. (Quick transition for the other team).

Coaching Points:

1. Expand when we regain possession by using the width.

2. Compress when under attack.

3. Midfielders awareness to get back and help the defense.

4. Defenders (+ Outside Mids) positioning on the field. Pressure - Balance - Cover.

5. Ability to combine on attack to isolate and get behind a defender.

6. Why do we want to create width?

7. Can we draw a opposing player in with short passes (creating space on the opposite flank) and quickly switch the ball with a long driven pass.

Layering Restrictions:

1. Midfield in the attacking and defensive third can only move within the outside channels = reinforce creating width to get out of defensive third, and to stretch the opposing team's defense out in the attacking third.

2. Midfield can enter the attacking third IF they combine with the forwards on a give and go or overlapping run = encourage players to draw opposing defenders out wide to combine around and minimize their numbers infront of the goal.

3. On attack, one defender can leave his/her third and enter the middle third in order to support the play (preferably defender on the side of the attacking play) = providing a supporting option to play the ball back to a switch point of attack.

4. Defenders, if they regain the ball must pass it left to right or right to left before moving the ball forward and out of the defensive third. Reminder - Midfield can move anywhere in the middle third. = Allows time for Midfield to compress and shift with the ball, denying the opportunity for the other team to get out and find their target player. Pressure - Cover - Balance.

5. On defense, one forward may leave his or her third and enter the middle third to check back for the ball = encouraging our forwards to provide themselves as a quick option for our defense if they regain possession. CP: Move where the ball travels. Left to right / Right to left
