Warm Up (10 mins) (10 mins)

Core Skill - Running with the Ball.

Specific Aspect - Running with the Ball into space to commit defenders.

Key Principle - Combination Play.

Session Objective: I am to improve the players ability to run with ball when they have space to attack and can attract defenders at the appropriate moment.

Warm Up (10 mins):

4 groups of 5 - 20 player squad.

Ball Mastery:

1 ball per player: Dribble, fast dribble, inside/outside, rollover / stepover, dragbacks

Session Objective: I am to improve the players ability to run with ball when they have space to attack and can attract defenders at the appropriate moment.

Skill Intro (20 mins):

10 players (2 grids)

Play starts at A, plays ball to player B who runs with the ball into space. Defender from C to try and win the ball, player B try to run with the ball or play back to player A WHO CAN RUN WITH THE BALL AND THEN PASS TO PLAYER AT STATION 1. Process is then repeated from the other end.

Defender to change after 90 seconds, looking for quick repetition.

Step down: Passive defending

Step up: 3 v 2

Player Task:

Run with the ball as quick as you can into the space.

If defender doesn't shut you down continue to run with the ball.

Communicate with your team mate

Use COD & COP.

Core Skill - Running with the Ball.

Session Objective: I am to improve the players ability to run with ball when they have space to attack and can attract defenders at the appropriate moment.

Skill Training (25 mins):

10 players (2 pitches)

5 v 5 on 1/2 pitch

Both teams can score a goal. Goal is scored by a player running with the ball over the goal line. when team scores, they pick up another ball from the goal line & head the other way (hidden learning is quick transition. When ball goes out by team attacking, defending team then to restart from nearest goal line.

Re-set game once no balls left on the goal lines, chance for players to catch a breather.

Can look at tournament style (winners play each other in a final) if needing to increase intencity.

Player Tasks:

Try to run at space between defenders

Be direct, attack the space at pace

Continue to drive at the space if the defnders don't try to get you

Use change of pace & direction when running with the ball.

If the defender closes you down, draw them in (get close) before passing or continuing to run with it.

Can you receive the ball facing towards the goal?

If you can't run forward, where can you go?

Defenders, can you keep your formation and make the closest player put pressure on the ball carrier?

Coaches Cues:

What direction do you run in? How do you know where the target is?

How can I engage a defender?

If you can't run forward, can you pass to a team mate who can then run forward?

If I pass to my team mate, where do I go to help?

Step Up's

Must start in attacking half with ball before being able to score.

All of attack team must touch the ball before being able to score.

Step Down

Make it a 6 v 4 scenario (Joker) to ensure overload of attack numbers & more chance for success.

10 players (2 grids)

5 v 5

Attackers to try and score goals in big goals.

Defenders try to run the ball over the end zone.

Once 3 goals scored, swap defence & attack teams around.

Varied starting point.
