Warm Up (5 mins)

Warm up:

Set up: 4 12 x 12 yard boxes with an out of bounds area in between boxes.

Drill 1: In all 4 boxes the players are given a number 1-4. the players then pass and move the ball with a sequence going from player 1-2-3-4-1.

Drill 2: Once the players have all had an adequate time being on the move and strecthing the coaches then remove 1 ball from each side so the players in the boxes side to side become one team. When the coach shouts 2 players' numbers the numbered blue and black team players will cross the shaded area into the other teams box and attempt to win the ball back. Once the players win the ball back they have to attempt to keep the ball by dribbling until the coach ends that part of the drill. Players should be expected to close the other team down for at least 30 seconds before returning to their original box.

Coaching points: Angle to recieve the pass, weight and timing of the pass to teammate, head up , look for space, relax when in possession of the ball.

Component 1 (10 mins)

5v5 Possession 2- Directional Game

Aim of the drill - team keep possession of the ball trying to get from side to side with the use of 2 floating players to create an overload.

2 Teams set up in a 40x40 yard box, with 2 players on each team as wall players and 2 floating players.

5v5 in the box with two floating players, team in possession need to get from one side to another keeping in possession of the ball. If the team manage to get from one side to another they get a point. Ball must go through the middle and is not allowed to just go from side to side.

Progression: Allow wall players to swap over with the player that passed the ball to them (increase the tempo).

Coaching Points - Angle to recieve pass, body position, quickness to win ball back, relaxing in possession.

4v4 Possession/Transition Game

Aim of the drill - keep possession of the ball and try and create goal scoring opportunities for your team

4 v 4 Blues vs Reds with 4 wall players and 2 floating players who play with the team that is in possession.

Two teams of 7 and 2 floating players are organized into an area of the width of the penalty box.. Both teams have 2 players positioned beside the attacking goal as wall players.

The blue team become defenders when the red team are in possession of the ball, this creates an 8v4 scenario, if the reds win the ball back the 8 v 4 will then be in their favour.

2 floating players are allowed to score, the defending team must work together, communicate and close any space/player down quickly.

When a team scores the play will re start with their goalkeeper, if the ball goes out the coach will pass another ball in.

Progression: Limit Touches on players in the middle of the area and wall players, increase tempo, add two floating players into either the red/blue team, make the area smaller to challenge the players, allow wall players to swap over with the player that passed the ball to them (increase the tempo).

Coaching Points - angle to recieve pass, scanning, calm in possession - make opponents work, decision making

Component 2 - GRP (10 mins)

Component 2 - GRP: Possession

2 zone game with players split up evenly into a 4v2 in each zone, the goalkeeper will act as an outfield player when their team is in possession of the ball. the game will be played in one half of the pitch. The team in possession must play 3 passes between each other before either passing the ball into the opposite zone to a striker or dribbling across.

From then, 2 floating players and 2 defenders from zone can move into the attacking zone to create a 6v4. If defenders win ball back; 2 defenders from opposite team retreat to their initial zone and floating players then play with the new team in possession.

coaching points: Patience when in possession, communication, movement on/off the ball, when transfering into the other zone do it at pace, good first touch, players playing on the half turn at all times, head up.

After playing the game with this set up for 5/6 minutes I will take the cones away and let players play 7v7 with 2 floating players.
