Defending 1 v 2 (20 mins)

Set Up

An appropriately sized pitch with 10 balls in the shaded area as shown. (The practice is mirrored in the opposite half).

The defenders are numbered 1 to 4 and can decide where each one will start. On the coach's call, the attackers must collect a ball from the shaded area and attack the goal. Offside rule is in play. Each defender in turn will take a turn at defending in a 1 v 2 situation. For the 5th ball any of the 5 defenders can defend. (Communication is key).

Rotate all players into defensive role.

Coaching Points

Move into a defensive position as soon as the first attacker touches the ball.

Stay between the ball and the goal.

If the attackers pass the ball move quickly across.

Seize the initiative if you can.

Try to force shots off the weaker foot or from wide areas.

Squad Practice (45 mins)

Squad Practice

The blues in the near half attack the goal against the reds. If the defenders win the ball, they play into the blue players in the opposite half, who then attack the other goal.

If an attacking team scores the coaches feed a ball to the opposite midfield to start an attack straight away.

(You may want to put a time limit on each attack to encourage match tempo and urgency).

Teams change roles.
