Passing Practice (10 mins)

Football Problem: Defending in the final third

Session Objective: Preventing the opposition from playing out.

Organisation: Passing practice. Players put into positions of 1,2,3,4,5,6,8,9,10,11,7. Red team pass ball arund like they are trying to play out. Players follow a sequence on the left side of the field: 1,4,5,8,6,11,9 and on the right side 1,3,2,6,9,10,7

Progression:

One touch

All players must touch ball once, no sequence, ball starts with 1. Follow pass.

Add in defenders to apply passive pressure.

Team Task:

Can the defenders, once added, move as a unit and dictate where the opposition can play a pass. E.g push them in to wide areas.

Player Tasks:

Communication, coach the player in front.

Players with ball can they play a forward pass.

Coaches Cues:

Body position of players receiving a pass, can you face forward allowing you to go forward after receiving a pass.

Can you limit the amount of touches to keep ball moving and at speed.

Defenders, can you work as a unit to dictate where the oppositon go with the ball. Push them toward the side line. Can you prevent a forward pass.

Positioning game (20 mins)

Football Problem

Session Objective

Organisation:

5v3 in one side of the grid. Red team need to prevent blues from playing a ball into other area. Play starts with GK. Once ball goes into other side the three reds from the side run in to apply pressure straight away. Other reds drop out to the sides.

Rules

If reds win ball and can play pass to GK get a point. Blues get a point for everytime the ball crosses into the other side and gets passed to GK. GK's can only play along the back line.

Blues must play ball on the ground and pass from one area into the other must be via a blue player.

Progression:

limit touches of the blues.

Blue swaps with GK when ever a pass back is made.

Add a red defender on the halfway line, who only plays aling the line.

Team Task:

Prevent forward pass into other area, win the ball and score.

Player Tasks

For reds:

Work as a unit keeping compact and prevent a pass into other area.

Communicate to each other in a way that helps the defender perform team task.

Deny blue time and space to play out.

Coaches Cues

Reds:

Move as one to push play to the sides.

Prevent a forward ass through the middle.

Reds who join in when ball has passed the halfway line need to move quicklty and in an organised manner.

Game training (25 mins)

Football Problem

Session Objective

Organisation:

Filed and players setup as shown. Field width reduced to allow reds to be more compact. Blue 9 is restricted the the shaded area.

Aim is for the blues to get the ball to 9. Reds need to try and prevent ball going through the 6,8,10. If reds win ball try to score, only have one chance.

Progression:

two touch limit for blues. Can only play the way they are facing, so if receive ball with back to goal must play ball back.

Time limit for reds when they win the ball to score.

Team Task

Red is to prevent ball going forward to the blue 9. Work as a unit to force ball wide, where it can be won. Prevent forward passes through the middle.

Player Tasks

REDS: Move as one. Keep compact. Comminicate with the player in front of you. Use positioning to prevent or cut off forward passes.

Coaches Cues

When ball played to blue 3 can you all move across toward ball. When sliding across can 8,10 red communicate so as to prevent blue 6 from getting the ball.

Can red 6 communicate with 8,10 in front so that they can prevent ball getting played throgu the middle.

Can 9 red prevent ball going across to the other side. Can red 7,11 prevent a pass on their outside shoulder to blue 2,5.
