ADP JUly 19th GU9S (20 mins)

2 v1: Defending Points

Split the field up into two zones. Each zone 10 meters.

One defender in each zone.

Coach plays a pass from goal to the either one of the attackers.

The attacker's must play 2 v 1 in the first zone and try to get into the second zone. If successful then they now play 2 v 1 again in order to the beat the 2nd defender and score a goal.

COACHING POINTS: Defender

The defenders role is to slow down the attack, not necessarily win the ball. They should prevent the ball being played forward.

Angle of Approach: In order to adopt the correct challenging position the defender must make up ground while the ball is travelling and get into line between the ball and the goal. The defender's job is to reduce passing angles and space for the player on the ball to play into.

Speed of Approach:The defender should approach their opponent as fast as then can. The defender has to slow their approach down. If they continues at speed when the attacker has the ball under control they will find it difficult to change direction. The approach by the defender should be slowed, and in a balanced position. Make sure the attacker doesn't beat the defender on the first touch, therefore don't close down too close or too fast or the attacker will nick it past the defender.

Closing Down the Last Few Yards: Closing down the last few yards (five to six yards) by slowing down and taking small strides.

Side on Approach: Side on approach and inch in, face the same way. Slightly crouching, the defender should adopt a sideways on position and edge in slowly towards the attacker.

Force Him One Way: Force the attacker down the line.

Closing Down: Get in position and balanced, get down and stay down and resist putting first foot forward.

Jockey: To jockey, defender should be defending at an angle, 1-3 yards from attacker, knee's bent, and on their toes allowing for quick movement.
