Description

A session based around working on passing and receiving the ball, often in congested areas. Frequently in matches play can break down when pressure is applied (3 pass rule features here). This is to encourage accurate passes and willingness to receive the ball, even when under pressure.

Technical Work (10 mins)

Pass and move in the area, passing between goals. Split team into smaller groups (can go as small as pairs.)

Can set goals up of different sizes, or use different coloured goals to force them to move to new space (Cannot pass through same colour twice in a row).

If too easy, limit number of touches for players - can they play it with 2 or 3 touch? Should NOT be dribbling, this is a pass and move drill.

Ability to control the ball and play a good pass.
Technical Tactical
Ability to play under pressure without losing the ball.
Technical Physical
Strength to hold off defenders.
Technical Psychological
Confidence to try to play passes through small goals.
Technical Social

Skill Game (10 mins)

Progress in the same area by turning one team into defenders. Ensure heavy overload so attackers outnumber defenders at least 2:1. Continue same drill except attackers now under pressure. Rotate defenders every few minutes so all get a chance to play whilst under pressure.

Note - have seen this done with equal size teams but one ball short so one team always has to chase the ball. This works with very aware players - can cause defending team to win back multiple balls or for attackers to not know who defenders are. Can be a progression if players are finding it very straight forward.

Moving into space

Increase the tempo to prevent defenders from winning ball back

Increase Difficulty

Increase number of defenders

Reduce size of teams

Reduce size of goals

Impose touch limit

Reduce Difficulty

Reduce number of defenders
