St Johnston Passing Drill (20 mins)

St. Johnston Passing drill

•Players get in groups of 3 with 1 ball. A grid 20 long and 10 wide is set with multiple grids in a line all attached to each other so you have a full line of these groups in 3.

•One player has the ball in between the 2 cones 10 yards apart. 1 player goes in the middle of the 20x10 grid and the last on the far end again in between the 2 cones 10 yards apart.

•The player in the middle moves away from the ball and then checks back to it and receives it on an angle. The player makes a turn and passes to the other side and does this process again.

•Once this looks good with all 3 players the player in the middle now passes the ball back where it came from and the initial passer send the ball to the other side.

•Key points here are to check to the ball on an angle, try to receive on your back foot (far foot from the ball) so that you can turn easily or make an easier rebound pass back to where it came from.

•Again, lots of talking, eye contact and movement.

St Johnston Passing Drill Build up

•Each of the grids are now attached and the group will be moving throughout all of the grids in a wave type movement. The first grid will run as before with a pass, a turn and a pass to the other side of the grid only this time, once the 3rd person receives the ball, they pass it back to the person in the middle and moves to the grid right next to them where they receive the ball back. They are now ready to start the same movement in grid number 2. (diagram will help immensely to visualize this drill)

•The person who started the passing moves to the middle spot, the person in the middle moves to the top and a new person with a ball is ready to start the movement again.

•Meanwhile, the person who moved to the new grid has 2 people waiting for him/her to do the same as before.

•Once this looks good move to the 2nd phase with a pass back to the initial pass and the switch to the far side where the deep player once again passes back to the middle and moves to the new grid to receive the pass back from the player who was in the middle.

6 Goal Game Switching Play

2 Teams work to score on the opposite 3 goals. Key to the game is to work on switching the play. You can make the center goals worth more points and you can have floaters to ensure more success as you see fit. You can also indicate only 1 or 2 of the goals that can be scored upon in order to force the players to think a bit more about where they are going.
