Hungry Hippos (10 mins)

Organization:

20 x 20 yard area circle of cones set up in the center, as shown

4x Pugg Goals

Lots of soccer balls

Disc cones

Parents required to assist

Instructions:

Did you know that Hippos eat soccer balls?

We have four very hungry Hippos waiting to be fed (pugg goals that parents hold)

Players are split into groups and assigned a Hippo to feed

Players must run into the middle to collect a soccer ball from the pool

Dribble this as close as they can to the Hippo and kick the ball into its mouth

When all the soccer balls are gone count the balls in each goal

Coaching Points:

Get the ball as close as you can before you m ake your kick into the Hippo’s mouth

Head up to make sure you kick the ball when the Hippo has its mouth open

No hands when collecting the ball from the pool

Progressions:

Set a time limit – Players now only have 1 minute to feed their Hippo

Ask the parents to open and close the Hippo mouth quickly

Finish with 3v3 scrimmage - If players are ready cognitively to do this then we will do 'Soccer City'

At the end ‘Blow up the balloon’ - All the kids start off by crouching down and when the coach ‘blows air’ into the balloon the kids slowly get bigger and bigger – standing on their toes and stretching to the sky. When Coach ‘pops’ the balloon the kids all relax, and fall down.
