SSA - playing through gates (20 mins)

Organization:

-The activity takes place in a 20 x 20 area.

-Place gates around your playing area as per the image, preferably in different coulours to distinguish between them. Gates should be approx 4-5 yds in size

-Create two even numbered teams (3 v 3 or 4 v 4) with neutral players on the outside of grid.

-Teams seek to keep possession and score points by passing to a teammate through a gate. If successful the team seeks to attack another gate. The team in possession can utilize the Yellow support players to maintain possession. Yellow players should try and play within 2 touches to keep good flow...

-a team cannot attack the same gate 2 times consecutively...

-After 4-5 minutes rotate a team out to act as the support players

Possible progressions

-shrink size of grid

-touch limit

-remove outside neutral players and play even numbers within the grid..eg 4 v 4 , 5 v 5

-teams have to play through 2 different gates to score a point

Coaching points

-Angles of support and timing of support

-verbal/visual communication

-look to create player overloads around the defender(s)

-Invite pressure and play away from pressure(near and far support necessary)

-penetration

-Change the rhythm of play when necessary; play slowly when you have to and play quickly when required.

King Louis Shooting (20 mins)

Organization:

-The King Louis finishing activity takes place in the entire 20 x 20 area. Use 1 portable goal and use pylons or coaching poles as the 2nd goal.(set them up against the red curtain)

- Teams play 5 v 5 as above with a clearly marked halfway line and players are confined to their half of the field only!

-Number players 1 to 4. This will be the order in which they will defend.

-The objective for the attacking team is to keep possession of the ball away from the pressuring defender and to try and score a goal from their half of the field.

-If the defender wins the ball he can pass to his teammmates and support. If the ball goes out of bounds or the attacking team misses the net the coach will serve a ball to the other team who will attack.

Coaching Points:

-attacking principles that encourage possession..support, movement, dispersal

-Possession, patience, penetration

-Scanning the area in front of you prior to receiving so as you can determine if it would be an opportune time to open the body, face the goal and prepare to receive and shoot.

-Observe keeper's position and select the proper surface/technique to score..far post, chip, driven, bent, etc

-Unless the goalie is positioned incorrectly the players should seek to finish far post and low(there is no chance for a rebound if a player misses near post or the ball goes over the net)

-Penetrate with shot or make possession pass? when, why?

Possible Progressions

-limit touches

-players must make a pre-determined number of passes prior to shooting

-see next image...
