Rondo Warm Up

Organization: Small Square Area. 4/5 players 1/2 defenders. 2 games of same size going on at the same time. Can play 2 games at once or increase players in 1 game depending upon numbers.

Instructions: Players are to constantly pass and move to keep the ball away from the defender. Game is directional with two target men on either end. Idea is to work the ball end to end, not just maintain possession. When defenders win the ball they try to maintain possession of it for as long as possible.

Coaching Points:

Penetrating pass is first option, with maintaining possession as the plan B.

1) Players must look for intelligent runs into space.

2) Players must have head up when they receive the ball and anticipate where their pass should go.

3) Constant movement, circulation and rotation.

4) Great communication and signalling is required.

5) Always offer support to the ball carrier.

6) 1-2 passes are a must, to get in behind defender.

7) Accurate passing is vital.

8) Always checking over shoulder, every second or so.

9) Should build to a lightning fast tempo.

10) All of the above coaching points are subtle extras if the group progression permists, the real coaching points are passing related and as follows;

Progressions:

1) Rectangular Rondo. 6v3/7v8 etc. Defenders are in the middle and can go anywhere but have to try to prevent the ball being played end to end.

2) Break out Rondo (after set amount of passes, players look to break out in to a second grid.

3) Rondo where excercises are introduce, ie, push up after every pass, etc.

Dynamic Warm Up

2 Following Lines, 5-6 mins of;

1) Straight Jogging

2) High Knees

3) Butt Flicks

4) Karaokes

5) Outside to inside knee lifts

6) Inside to outside knee lifts

7) Fast Feet

Interplay Main Session

Organization: As many grids as required. 15x20 meter grid. 6 players per grid. 4 live players and 2 target men fixed behind the line.

Instructions: Players are now instructed to get the ball to the target man under semi opposed defending which becomes fully opposed.

Coaching Points:

1) Nice accurate weight of passes.

2) Look up to asses the time, place and type of pass.

3) Turn to receive the ball back foot to allow a good follow up pass.

4) First touch has to be good as drill is fast paced and depends upon accuracey to work.

5) Target player can move side to side so should look to play their part in creating the passing lanes.

6) Communication here is vital in order to give the players an idea of where to put the ball.

7) As the target men can not score, it makes sense to pressure ansd defend the receivers as numbers are even, and try to stop them picking up the ball.

Progressions:

Interplay Main Session

Organization: As many grids as required. 15x20 meter grid. 6 players per grid. 4 live players and 2 target men fixed behind the line.

Coaching Points:

1) Nice accurate weight of passes.

2) Look up to asses the time, place and type of pass.

3) Turn to receive the ball back foot to allow a good follow up pass.

4) First touch has to be good as drill is fast paced and depends upon accuracey to work.

Progressions:

1) Target man takes a touch out with the ball before playing, then performs a U Turn and changes direction before passing.

2) Game evolves into a lay off drill.

3) Game progresses into 2 interchanges between centre players (give and go).

4) Game progresses into a 'take over' drill where taking player must drop lower than giving player in order to receive the ball.

Combination Play

Organization: As many 7x15 or 10x20 grids as required. 4 Players per grid. 1 ball per group. Pop up goals with spare balls in.

Instructions: Player A plays ball to player B who must turn and get the ball to player D. Player D receives the ball and player C pressures. Players D & B must now play 2v1 against C. When they break the half way line, either player D or B now takes on player A in a 1v1. Players then rotate and the play always starts from the same place.

Coaching Points:

1) Try to receive the ball on the back foot but high enough up the field to penetrate but not too high that an intercept is possible.

2) Passes must be played quick enough to allow player to escape the defender, too slow and it puts the receiver under pressure.

3) Read defenders positioning and body shape to decide on when and where to take them on in the 1v1 situation.

4) When initiating the 2v1, whether to dribble or to pass will be decided by the positioning of the defender and his body angle. Read the defenders intentions.

5) The first touch of player D must be spot on as if it is not, then the defender will be on top of him and prevent the 1-2 release pass.

6) Turnign player can use arm and body to get a little bit physical and shield the ball.

7) Turning player must get into the best position to receive the 1-2 pass and read the defenders intentions when deciding where to go.

Progressions:

Progress in to 2v1 at both ends.

Combination Play SSG

Organization: 25x35 meter grid. 8 players.

Instructions: Team in possession is to try to score points by passing to either one of the target men. This must be in order though, pass to the one on the left first, then once achieved or not achieved, go to the one on the right. Target men can only move up and down on their line, not in to the field. When defenders win it, they simply try to keep it away from the attackers who must try and steal it back and relaunch the game. Both target men are on the same team so can score to eachother directly by making a penetrating pass.

Coaching Points:

1) Off the ball movement is key in such a small, easily defended space in order to drag defenders out of position, especially clearing a passing/shooting lane to the target men/goal.
