1 v 1 dual (20 mins)

Organization:

-The activity takes place in an 18 x 12 area. Keep lines to a minimum (3-4 players preferred).

-Coach passes the ball to Player A. Player A attempts to dribble over Player B's endline for 1 point. As the ball travels to PLayer A, Player B travels to pressure the ball. If Player B wins the ball he dribbles through a side gate for 1 point or passes to the coach for 2 points.

-max 10-12 seconds.coach discretion and play is dead.

-Have the blue team and white teams defend at 5 minutes intervals

-keep score and keep it competitive...total 20 min

-COACH THE DEFENDER AND NOT THE ATTACKER

Coaching Points:

-Speed of Approach/Angle of approach: The defender should quickly travel to pressure as the ball travels to the attacker...long strides..Get there do not dive in!

What to observe as the player travels to pressure(cues):

-If the attacker's 1st touch is good the defender must take smaller steps to slow down

-If the attacker's 1st touch is BAD that is a cue to maintain speed and win the ball)

-can the defender bend run to force the attacking player one way to make play predictable...

-Distance: Defender should be roughly arms length away from attacker, take on a side-on body balanced position position, knees bent & weight on front of feet,

-Eye on ball

-Delay(Patience) - Be patient as it allows teammates to recover in a game BUT threaten to win the ball

Possible Progression:

Same as above EXCEPT:

-Give the defender 3 points if he wins the ball in A's half of of the field. This will encourage the defender to PRESSURE as quickly as possible.

-The Coach will alternate serving to each team during this activity

Coaching Points:

-same as above

-PROACIVE DEFENDING - Dispossess to Possess!

1 v 1 with counter goals (20 mins)

Organization:

-The activity takes place in a 18 x 12 area.

-The coach passes to Player A, Player A passes to Player B and defends, Player B attempts to finish.

-If Player A wins the ball he/she can pass to the Coach or to Players D or E who also function as a target.

-Defenders receive 3 points for winning the ball and passing to Player D or E

-Continue activity by serving from opposite side.Players return to their original line.

-Rotate defenders to attackers every 5 minutes

Keep score and make it competitive

Coaching Points:

Same as above+

So for the coaches,,Simply put when a player pressures he/she should:.....

(1) Protect the GOAL- Back to the net, see the ball

(2) Close down: pressure the ball quickly

(3) Slow down: smaller steps as he/she approaches the player with the ball(given the attacker has a good first touch)

(4) Sit down: Side on to ball, knees bent, arms length away, force in one direction to make play predictable

(5) Stay down: stay low and see the ball

(6) Calm down: Be patient, delay..threaten the ball however

(7) Win the ball- When the time is right try and win the ball to gain possession.
