SSG (10 mins)

Instructions

30x30 grid with two 30x10 wide lanes.

Goal of practice is to explore and achieve success while using a diamond and two wide players.

When using a diamond formation play can get very congested and narrow which can make a vertical pass impossible, we will be looking to manipulate the opposition with movement from our CM's to get our CAM on the ball, thus turning the opposition around.

In possession a 6v3 with use of wide players. Objective is for Whites to get ball over the Blues end line, Blues aim to win the ball and score in one of two goals.

Coaching Points:

-creation of angles to receive the ball.

-body shape when receiving the ball: open body to play forward? Side on? Back to goal?

-surface of foot when receiving: safe side? Ball across body to play forward? Away from danger? Toward danger? (Xavi - draw defender in and play quick).

-triggers: be on the move, if you don't receive then can you move to where you may next receive?

Methods of success: play may become forced or tough to break through so offer methods.

-ask players for others. Wide overload? CDM carry?

Allow Blues back in for opposed practice.

Points:

-team shape: difference between in and out of possession - wide and high to stretch when in, narrow and compact to deny when out.

-double movements: now the defenders are live, they are not so easy to get away from, can we try a double or triple movement to wriggle free.

-quick play: one twos, passes round the corner, one and two touch play.

-quick decision making: after working on patterns players should now be able to see patterns forming in play.

-movement and rotation: Screen 4

-switching the play: when and why?

Conditions:

-Wingers can not cross the end line with the ball, it must be done centrally.

-Defender can pressure winger after his first touch.

Progressions:

-3 passes before the ball can go wide.

-Add extra defenders for Wingers 1v1.

Both these points, ask players why we would restrict the ball going wide until it does?

Reason: our wingers are our danger players, if we keep stretching opposition we would get a 1v1 for the winger in a game situation.

-add in striker for goal finish.

Rotations

A formation can at times be rigid or predictable, we may need to manipulate and move and rotate to break through.

The CM's will initiate our rotation. A CM may drop (seen above) to become level with the CDM, this drags the Blue CM and then opens space for the CAM to be able to receive the ball, we move to a 2-2 rather than a 1-2-1 but still have our diamond. We need communication, teamwork and vision from the two CM's over who will drop. If the right one drops, like above, that opens up space in turn for the left one to push on.

Other rotations: winger comes in, midfielder goes out.

Phase Play (20 mins)

Instructions

Following on from earlier. Whites look to create through their diamond and 2 wingers.

Aim for the Blues is to score within 10 seconds into the 2 counter goals

The Whites wingers will provide the width, however they have a 3 touch limit in wide areas.

Positional Points

CM's - main players for rotation points, drag and stretch opposition midfielders to create space to play.

CAM - stay high and make blind side runs to receive.

Wingers - keep width to allow diamond to perform, support and make double/triple movements to get on ball

#9 - occupy ball side CB's attention with movement to drag and stretch. Stay on shoulder of Blue's backline to stretch.

All points

-body position when receiving (OPEN if you CAN, SIDE ON if you NEED to, back to goal if you MUST).

-which part of the foot to receive on? Safe side, goal side, no touch?

-movement to play, rotations from rotation players (CM's).

-movement to receive, double/triple movements.

-quick play: one-two's, passes around the corner, one and two touch play.

-triggers: as ball travels, opposition may be watching, that's when we move.

Considerations

How can the movement of the 9 allow space for 10 to get on the ball?

How can the wing players come inside to provide an overload to open up combination play in the middle of the park?

Creating numbers up in the final 3rd with the 9.

Possible Scenario

Types of rotation

A winger may drop deep to support, this will test the discipline of the opposition full back. Our right sided CM may have to make the opposite run. If the opposition full back follows our winger, the CM will have space to attack, if he doesn't follow, our CM will in turn test the discipline of the opposition CM which will momentarily allow time and space for our player dropping deep.
