Nearest player to the football is resonsible for providing immediate pressure and getting in line with any potential forward passing opportunity.

Players pressing dont have to win the ball. Delay and stop positive pass.

Recovery runs should be angled towards the defending teams own goal.

Priority should be to get goal side of the ball and mark.

Discuss individual defending techniques, i.e. side on, get there fast arrive slow, dont over commit, on toes, focus on the ball, goal side defending, stay on feet, etc

Slide as a unit to the side of the field the ball is on to compact the field.

Communication - Tell team mates to press (step!) when needed.

Man marking to deny space.

Curved runs to cut off forward passing options if needed to block potential passing channels down the line.

Can we do anticipation marking (anticipate and intercept the ball before being received).

Control speed of approach so no to dive in.

Discuss angle of approach.

Keep the feet moving whilst jockeying.

Going to ground (i.e. slide tackle) should be a last resort.

Prevent Crosses and Shoots.

Feint to tackle.

Focus. Eyes on the ball at all times.

Discuss secondary positioning of the centre backs and supporting mids. Refer to the diagrams below for additional explanations.

Discuss delay, cover and support with the centre backs supporting.

Compact the play as a team and slide to the strong side of the field.

Defending Midfielders should be tracking any attacking runs from midfield.
