Moving 'rondo' (75 mins)

Organisation:

30m x 30m square split into 4 equal sections

Any number of players but must be two defenders in each of the two sections. Above I have shown 5 v 2 (x2) = 14 players

Balls

Bibs

Objectives:

This is a moving 'rondo', where the teams play 5 v 2 possession games. After they have made three passes, they all continue to pass and retain possession from the defenders but move into one of the two other boxes that are free.

The defenders carry bibs to identify themselves and rotate roles every 2 minutes.

This drill requires communication and teamwork, along with demonstration of good technique of passing and control.

Progressions:

- Encourage players to use 'one touch' as much as possible

- Look to make a penetrative pass between the two defenders as they look to press the attacker (as shown in A)

- Increase the number of consecutive passes if the attacking teams are finding it easy

- Have one of the attackers enter one of the empty boxes after 3 passes (can be increased) to emphasise moving the ball wide away from the defenders and continue playing the moving rondo game (as shown in B)

Tactical - working as a team; communication

Technical - Passing; control

Social - fun, teamwork

Psychological - decision making processes

Move the ball (75 mins)

Organisation

25 x 45 m (split into 3 sections of 15m as above)

3 equal teams, split into the three sections

Balls

Four small gates (approx 1m wide) along the dividing lines

Objectives:

In their groups of 5, get the players to work out how many ways they get the ball from one side

to the other: one long pass; four short; one short, one long etc.

After five minutes split the middle team in two – one pair defends the gates on one side and the others defend the gateson the other side. The two outside teams must try to pass quickly in order to find a chance to pass the ball through one of the gates. Rotate teams every five minutes.

Key points:

- Can the outer teams move the ball quickly so they attract the defenders one side of their zone and move the ball quickly to the other side of the zone to score a point by passing the ball through the open gate.

- Communication between the teams (both defensively and attacking)

- Technique - accurate passing and control. Open body shape

Technical - passing; control; open body shape

Tactical - working as a team; create space by staying wide

Social - working as a team; competitive

Psychological - numerous decision making processes

SSG (75 mins)

Organisation:

30 x 40m pitch with goals at each end.

5m wide channels at each side with cones positioned as above

7v7 with GK's optional (numbers can be adjusted)

Game rules:

Normal games, apart from that one player from each team must remain in the wide channels at all times. Points are scored as following:

- move the ball wide to a player in the channel so they can dribble the ball through the cones - 1 point

- score a goal after the wide player has crossed the ball from the wide channel - 5 points

- normal goals scored - 1 point

Progressions:

- opposed dribbling in the wide channels

- remove cones to allow points to be scored by receiving the ball in a wide area

- only one player from each team can stay in the wide channels at any time during the game
