Description

Focus: Primary - The player's ability to recognize when pressure is tight, and decision player receiving the ball make when he/she does not have time to turn and face the opposition. Secondary - 1v1 Attacking Move, Inside-Outside.

Amount of Pressure: One defender - Pressure present.

Type of Pressure: Varies.

Decisions looking to affect:

1. Ability to identify amount of pressure being applied to the ball, as the player receives it.

2. Choice to open up on the back foot - closer to the opponent, or receive the ball on the front foot to protect the ball and shield it away from the defender.

3. Recognition of the second defender. Is the second defender present? Is he/she in a good spot to cover the first defender if I beat him/her? If so, do I have a supporting player I can pass the ball to?

4. Proactive mentality after passing the ball. Can you quickly signal to your teammate for a Give and Go to get around the defender, or support

their run and prepare yourself for the cross?

5. If player receiving the ball the ball passes it back to the original sender - does that individual decide to take the defender on 1v1, or combine around in a 2v1? (Reading the defender)

Move(s): Inside - Outside.

Technical Repetition: Unopposed / Semi (30 mins)

Prior to Activity:

Players go through their Dynamic warm-up and SAQ in area indicated on diagram

Organization:

4 players per grid

1 Ball in play

Extra balls off to the side

Instructions:

As shown in diagram. Note Left-Grid demonstrates the first portion of the activity and the Right-Grid is a progression. Middle-Grid shows the players activity after receiving the ball on the endline and traveling back with the ball.

1. One player on both endlines. Two players in the middle of the grid, one attacking the other defending.

2. Attacker must receive the ball and connect with their target - the other player on the opposite endline (may represent a teammate or goal).

3. If pressure is tight can the player receiving the ball combine and get around that defender on a Give and Go? (Progression)

Coaching Points:

1. Movement off the ball to receive.

2. Vision - Player checking shoulders quickly before and after receiving the ball.

3. Players ability to recognize pressure (tight vs. loose)

4. Selection of foot and surface to receive the ball, based on pressure.

5. Player's ability to control and manipulate ball away from pressure, if they receive it on the wrong foot.

6. Execution of move.

7. Execution of next action - pass/shot.

Progressions / Regressions:

(P1) - If I can't open up on my back foot and play to the target right away how can I get around him/her without losing possession of the ball? Give and Go.

(R1) - Allow players to practice technical and rotation of activity before adding in the defender

Technical Repetition: Opposed (15 mins)

Organization:

4  players per grid

1 Ball in play

Extra balls off to the side

Instructions:

As shown in diagram. Note Players are playing to opposite endlines. Progress activity and add goals

1. Player A starts with the ball.

2. Player B must cross the other half of the field and then re-enter his/her half to receive the ball.

3. Player A and Player B are looking to play the ball to Player D for a point.

      Scenarios

         (1) Player C  does not cut off the passing lane between Player A and Player D. Player A passes the ball to Player D for a point.

         (2) Player C cuts off the passing lane between Player A and Player D. Player A passes the ball to Player B. Player B receives the ball on his/her back foot:

             (a) Player C doesn't apply pressure quickly - Player B receives the ball on the back foot and passes to Player D for a point.

             (b) Player C applies pressure quickly cutting off the passing lane to Player D - Player B passes the ball back to Player A. Player A looks to take on the defender 1v1 (with a Inside-Outside) or 2v1 (with a Give and Go) depending on how the defender reacts.

Rotation:

Players A and B are on one team, Players C and D are on the other.

Once one team attempts to get a point, the other team will do the same in the opposite direction. Players switch roles every turn between being the defender / target and passing player / receiving player. If there are more than four players per group the receiving player must loop across the endline their team is trying to get across and return to their "starting" endline after their turn.
