Warm-up: Rondo (10 mins)

Organization:

10 x 10 or 15 x 15 depending on numbers

Player 1 (defender) : 2 (attackers) ratio

Max amount of player in a grid = 5 attackers

Instructions:

1. Possession game where there is 1 defender every 2 players. Defender tries to steal the ball. "Attackers" try to possess. (Much like keep away)

2. Defender tries to touch the ball. If he/she does they switch with the player who lost possession.

3. If the ball goes out the defender stays the same (defenders must touch or steal the ball away to become an attacker)

4. Progress to Rondo transfer box (P3)

Coaching Points:

1. Communication

2. Awareness of space/pressure etc.

3. Try to play to back foot and turn to switch ball in other direction when receive it if possible

4. Quality/weight of passes.

5. Angles/distances of support

6. Constantly re-evaluate your position (can I be in a better position?)

Progressions:

(P1) - 5 passes equals a life against the current defender. Must stay in for a second round after touching the ball

(P2) - A nutmeg or a through ball (if there are two defenders) counts away a life against the defenders.

(P3) - Rondo transfer: two grids are combined and the teams work against each other

1v1 Defending - Tracking (25 mins)

Organization:

20 x 15 yard area set up as shown

4 Players

1 Ball (Additional around the outside)

Instructions:

1. Red player passes the ball into the blue player and quickly closes down the space in between.

2. Blue player dribbles toward the opposite endline varying between Messi and Ronaldo touches.

3. Red player is looking to identify big touches in which he/she maybe able to steal the ball, by tapping it with his/her finger tips.

Coaching Points:

1. Angle, speed and distance of approach

2. Deny space and penetration

3. Low center of gravity

4. Body weight on back leg, allowing front foot to poke the ball away

5. Body positioning - On the outside shoulder of the attacker; low center of gravity; feet staggered.

6. 1v1 scenario - Can you force the player out of bounds. Using the sideline as a 2nd defender.

4 v 3 with Recovering Midfield (25 mins)

Organization:

Full field (with expanded widths)

Divided into thirds, as shown

Total: 7v7

Outside Midfielders playing in the flanks

1 Ball (Restarts with Coach)

Instructions:

1. 2v3 in the Attacking third

2. Defenders must regain possession and play to the outside midfielders in the middle third.

3. On transition, midfielders may attack in the final third down the flank. IF they combine with the forward or center-mid in the box through a give and go they may enter the box as well.

4. If the midfielders defense is under pressure and is looking to regain possession, they must come back to support/help mark another player to create balance.

5. If a team shoots and misses, they player who shot the ball must go retrieve it. (Quick transition for the other team).

Coaching Points:

1. Expand when we regain possession by using the width.

2. Compress when under attack.

3. Midfielders awareness to get back and help the defense.

4. Defenders (+ Outside Mids) positioning on the field. Pressure - Balance - Cover.

5. Ability to combine on attack to isolate and get behind a defender.

6. Why do we want to create width?

Restrictions:

1. Outside Midfielders can not enter middle final third prior to doing a Give and Go or Overlapping run. ( = Encourages players to play out wide)

2. One Defender can enter the middle third if team is in possession ( = Provides supporting option for outside midfielder, and builds up numbers on attack)

3. Outside Midfielders may enter the middle final third without having to do a Give and Go or Overlapping run. ( = Allows players to be creative. Tests to see if players still play out wide and expand)

4. One Defender, supporting the play in the middle third, can enter the final attacking third if ball is played back to him/her. ( = Builds up attack)

5. If defenders regain possession of the ball, they must move the ball left to right, or vise versa, before moving forward. ( = Creates a moment to teach and reinforce midfielders dropping back and compressing in the center. Denying opposition of space and opportunity to get out of defensive third.)
