Red Light, Green Light (15 mins)

Warm Up - Need about half the field, set up 2 end zones about 5 yards in width, with coned line in the middle. Balls for each player on one half of field.

Activity - Players on the ball in one half, dribble on "green", stop on "red" commands. Coach introduces "Fast Lane" command in which players dribble as fast as possible with positive first touch across half line and into far endzone, where they will stop the ball. There are endzones at each end, so players will come out again but on the near half and repeat steps / commands.

Progressions:

- Coach introduces "Yellow Light" command, in which players will toe tap the ball either in place or moving forward, if possible.

- Coach can act as defender on "Fast Lane" command applying as much or as little pressure as needed

- Coach introduces "Blue Light" in which coach will act as the police and capture all the missing soccer balls that the kids have. Players will have to perform pull back move (simple drag back is fine as long as coach demonstrates it) and then have the ability to dribble anywhere in the space with the end zones being "safe".

Shield Circle (10 mins)

Set up - create circle with cones or use center circle if available, all players with ball inside circle

Activity - Players dribble and control ball inside circle. Coach (blue) acts as defender and tries to knock balls out of circle. If ball goes out, players must dribble all the way around the circle once and then reenter.

Progressions

- Add 1 to 2 player defenders

- On "go to goal" command, players dribble out of circle and attack / score on wide goals

4 Square (15 mins)

Set Up - 4 equally sized grids can be created with disc cones. 3 attacking / dribbling players each with a ball, in all 4 of the squares. 1 defender w/out a ball defending in each square.

On coach command, red attacking players are asked to dribble their ball in their designated square while keeping the ball with close control away from defender. Defender will attempt to knock balls out of square.

Progressions:

- Coach allows attacking players to freely dribble to any square, but defenders must stay in their designated square.

- Coach takes away 1 ball from each square group of 3 attacking players, creating 4 support players who can move to receive passes from red attacking teammates

- Coach can create target goals (puggs or with cones) outside of 4 squares for defenders to shoot at IF they win the ball

Scrimmage (20 mins)

Scrimmage - Game should be played on a large enough space comparable to weekend game play. Line field w. cones and place goals (if using Puggs you will need at least 2 connected) at each end line. Please look to play against another team of the same sex if possible! We want to mimic actual game play, so look to have 4 vs. 4 with a goalie. Sub players as needed every 2 mins. Start with actual kick-offs and include throw ins, goal kicks & corners. Coaches MUST support the kids with their comprehension and possible task completion. We want our players to successfully complete these new game elements, so look to back opposing players off the ball until on the ball players perform task (kick-off, throw in, etc...) successfully.

No Progressions - Let the kids play!

Coaching Points

- support understanding and completion of restarts

- support goalies w/ understanding their goalie area --> understanding when / where to use hands, what goal kicks are, distributing the ball with throws and punts. Rotate goalies and do not force players to play goal!

- any time the goalie has the ball (in hands, or w/ goal kick) have opposition retreat to the half way line. We want out players to learn how to get the ball out of their own end, so have goalie distribute wide and then play out. Allow opposing players to cross half line on a 5-10 second countdown, AFTER goalie plays the ball wide

- conversations regarding shape / positioning will be difficult, but will be needed.
