Defending: Back three (15 mins)

Defending Back Three:

- On coaches command react to cone and have good P-C-B

- Progression. Coaches will

Coaching Points: 1) individual defensive stance, 2) communication: force right or force left; I go ball, I got cover, etc. 3) Quick transition

Defending the dribble or the long ball

- If there's no pressure on the ball and you see the player put his head to hit the long ball, what do we do? (Yell side on and starting running back side on)

- if the player is dribbling with no pressure, the three backs do not break shape but keep dropping at the speed of dribbler.

Defending Aerial balls (25 mins)

Training Flat-Three:

Dealing with air balls and/or dribbling from central positions.

Progression:

1) Player will put their head down and serve balls over the top. Defenders will yell 'side on' and start to turn and sprint to be able to deal with the ball.

1b) Add Holding Mid. If Holding mid applies pressure to ball, what does back line do? What if holding mid gets beat and distance is too far to cover? What does backline do?

1c) add forward who checks off of backline. What do backs do? (pressure, cover & balance)

2) what happens if ball is played over top of one of the backs and attacker is breathing down your neck? (hit it out for a throw in; also position your body between the player and ball so that they can't come in front and win it)

Coaching Points: As the ball is about to be played, central defender needs to yell side-on and players turn and start running as they seek to deal with aerial ball.

Players: Addi, Channing, Kelly, Malena, Emma, Bianca

Defending Aerial balls from central and wide areas (15 mins)

1) Kick ball in air. And have players defend by heading it out up and high.

2) Defend crosses. One defender comes out to service and the two defend cross with one attacker in box.

What are the cues to drop and defend? Are you adjusting your feet when the ball comes in? When you are going to the ball, are you communicating? How are we clearing it. What is the response for the defenders?
