Description

Objective - Improve understanding of positioning and decisions when facing shots from wider angles

Intentions

  • Positioning - slightly edging to near post. Explain and demonstrate how we cover more goal from an angle, and don't have to position on ball line -> centre of goal as this exposes near post
  • Use of appropriate set, always balanced and patient to give us the best chance to make the save

Warm Up - Head/Hands (10 mins)

Objective - Raise HR/body temp while also including a mental activation

  • GK's partner up with 1 ball between two
  • One GK works while the other serves
  • Server throws ball at head height and will call either "head" or "hands"
  • If the call is "head", keeper must catch. If it is hands, they must head it back (note it is opposite to the call)

Objective - Activate hands while working footwork to move from straight to angled shooting situation

  • 1) Keeper takes central service
  • 2) Keeper opens hips and moves laterally to face angled service
  • 3) Keeper returns to centre and repeats for other side
  • Sets of 3 on each side
Coaching points
  • Efficient and intentional footwork - open hips and shuffle
  • Reinforce set position and handling habits

Objective - Work longer depth and angled movements while building ground familiarity

  • 1) GK steps forward for scoop service
  • 2) GK drop step recovery into angle for service
  • 3) GK lateral footwork across for low extension service
Coaching Points
  • Short, dynamic footwork - appropriate for distance (shuffle for short movements, cross-step for longer)
  • Maintain balance with short steps and use of bodyweight
  • Good handling habits on extension - positive angle, hands in front of body, fully extend (don't get elbow jammed)

Shot Stopping Activity - Angled Strike w/Around - Thru Distro (20 mins)

Objective - Build understanding of proper positioning for angled strikes

  • 1) GK drops out to receive back-pass from S1
  • 2) GK plays through to S2
  • 3) S2 plays to S3 who is in position for an angled shot (this should be coach for younger groups)
  • 4) GK faces angled strike
Coaching Points 
  • Positioning - when ball is on angle (outside near post), our positioning changes. No longer on a line between ball and middle of goal, we must edge closer to near post. I will show you a good way to explain this. 
  • Set - appropriate height for distance of shooter. Calm and balanced, weight forward

  • 2) GK plays through to S2
  • 3) Live on S2's touch. Possible actions - 
    • Square for angled strike
    • Slip for cutback
    • 1/2 with wider player
    • Shoot
