Football/Soccer Session (Academy Sessions): DRIBBLING, SCANNING AND COMMUNICATION

Method:

5 gates 1m wide within a 12 x12m square

Teams in 6 pairs are in the circle with 1 football between each pair. 

Player A in the pair dribbles in the square while their partner Player B will find a vacant gate.

Player B must communicate their intentions to their partner player A dribbling with the ball who must find a clear position within 2m of the gate.  Player A then passes the ball through the gate to their partner player B who resumes dribbling in the circle.  Their partner A must then find another gate with the above process to apply again.

Coaching Points:

As 12 players (6 pairs) will be in the square looking to reach one of 5 gates, dribbling players must navigate a clear path to their ultimate gate within a relatively tight space.  Their partner can help with this but dribbling player needs to glance up and scan their surroundings.

Clear communication by their partner to reach a free gate.  Only one team at a gate at a time.

Open body stance by players at the gate to navigate their direction of dribbling to the next gate, i.e. thinking ahead by scanning the space.
