Shooting #1 (15 mins)

Organization:

*4-6 players per group (set up 2 areas)

*poles/cones to mark pattern to dribble

Description:

*Players will alternate dribbling through to middle pole, around and to the final pole

*Players will alternate shooting with their left foot and right foot off the dribble

*The goal is for the player to shoot as they reach the final pole, not past it. This will force players to focus on hip & shoulder rotation through the ball to create power

Coaching points:

*focus on laces strike for power

*point toes down and away

*ankle locked in place

*heel to glute & through (windup & follow through)

*shoulder & hip rotation

*land on striking foot (follow through)

*Head up to look at target before striking, head down on ball when striking

*striking back middle of ball with second knuckle of big toe

Shooting #2 (20 mins)

Organization:

*Split into 2 teams

*Goalkeepers in nets if available

*Poles to mark spot where players need to shoot before

Description:

*White team dribble with ball and must shoot before passing the red line

*Blue team dribble with ball and must shoot before passing the red line

*First to 5 goals wins (make it a competition!)

*Shooting off the dribble

Options:

1. Have set goalkeepers in net (swap if needed)

2. After each player shoots they become GK (must alternate - both teams cannot go at same time)

3. Set cones in corners and pinnies on top corners for points (must be between post & cone for point)

Football/Soccer Session Plan Drill (Colour): Crossbar challenge

Crossbar challenge (5 mins)

Organization:

*Split players into two teams

*Choose a distance for players to strike the ball towards their net (just in front of half, between 2 pillars)

*Ensure players are maintaining 3m distance

Description:

*Each team tries to strike the ball and hit the crossbar

*Players on each team alternate, but both teams can shoot at same time

*First to 5 crossbars wins!

If players are struggling with this, add in the ability to hit the posts (must be in air, can only bounce once, etc. based on ability)

Focus on coaching points to help play a lofted ball:

  • contact point is underneath the ball with that second knuckle
  • Leaning back to help get underneath the ball
  • Angle of approach - can't be straight behind ball, don't want to be at an extreme angle either (allow foot to get underneath ball with more of an angle)
  • Not about how hard or fast you swing your foot - about the striking technique!
You will notice some players may have a lot of spin on their ball. They may be striking the ball with the inside of their foot, and on the outside of the ball - causing it to spin. Remind them to contact the back of the ball, on the lower half.
