Rondo (10 mins)

Key Factors

  • Exterior players - good first touch? Tempo of pass? Head up to plan next pass? Anticipation - do they expect to receive every pass and are they ready for it?
  • Interior players - work together? tempo of pressure? Effort and work rate? Shut down ball and a passing lane? Dont get split?

Organisation

  • Players split into four equal sized groups and form themselves into four circles no more than 10m across
  • Two players take their place in the centre of the circle and attempt to stop the exterior players making passes.
  • When a pass is intercepted the person who played the pass and the player to his left replace the defenders in the centre - unless defenders had been split or nutmegged where they take one more turn

Positive Possession (20 mins)

Key Factors

  • Good tempo of passing?
  • Positional awareness?
  • Good communication & support?
  • Use all space in possession? Close down space and works as a unit out of possession?
  • Body shape? Half turn? Arms out to protect?

Organisation

  • Players play in grid width of penalty box from edge of penalty area to half way line. One player from each side is positioned on the edge of the area and joins play when he is passed to with the passer taking his place.
  • Progress to cant pass to player in the same square
  • Progress to cant pass into a sideways grid
  • Progress to playing diagonal passes only
  • Pitch is 30x30 needed with a an 8v8 or 7v7 taking place

Positive Possession (20 mins)

  • Good tempo of passing in possession?
  • Positional awareness?
  • Good communication & support?
  • Use all space in possession? Close down space and works as a unit out of possession? Cut off passing lanes? Problem solve as a unit?
  • Body shape? Half turn? Arms out to protect?

Organisation

  • Players play in extended grid with the centre horizontal grid occupied by 3 players from both sides.
  • The remaining 5 players from each team occupy the two horizontal grids at either end.
  • Play starts when the coach passes to the blue team who are challenged to make 4 passes before playing bounce pass to one of their central players before passing to the red team at the other end. As this happens all three red players from the middle section attempt to win the ball back
  • Progress to up to 3 players from the middle section can press while remainder stay to prevent bounce pass
  • Progress to up to 3 players from the middle section can press as above AND up to 2 players from end can enter middle section to prevent bounce pass.

Defending From Front Skill (20 mins)

Key Factors

  • Can the players play with heads up with good body position that allows forward passing options?
  • Do the players scan for options prior to receiving the ball?
  • If no immediate forward passing option is available do the team in position maintain possession and look to move the opposition around to create openings?
  • Do players consider 2nd and 3rd pass? Movement and support?
  • Do players out of possession communicate? work as a unit? narrow the pitch? problem solve?
  • Coaching feedback to be concurrent, positive and focus on 'what' and 'how' style questions.
  • Allow a player led tactical break

Organisation

  • Players play in half pitch with a line down the centre of the pitch
  • Reds are initially tasked with playing out from the back and their target is to score on one of the goals on the halfway line.
  • Blues are initially tasked with defending from the front and winning the ball as high up the pitch as possible before attempting to score in the full sized goal
  • Reds progress from first pass being to FB to choice of FB or CB, then progress to FB or CB or CM then progress to any player to beat the press.
  • Blues progress to allowing first pass to happen before closing off one side of the pitch and laying traps for pressing then progress to mid block and allowing play to happen in front.
  • Teams change ends to allow changing of roles.

Defending From Front SSG (20 mins)

Key Factors

  • Half pitch SSG in which players are asked to utilise what they have been learning in this session. Do they play with heads up and look to break lines? Do they look to play out from the back? Body angle allows forward passing? Look for forward / angled passes? Maintain possession if forward passes not possible? Narrow up out of possession and apply pressure to the passer? Look to create overloads - 2v1s? Can the GK be involved in breaking lines?
  • Do out of possession players apply defending from front principles? High block? Mid Block? Set traps? play what they see? communicate effectively? move as a unit?

Organisation

  • Teams play in half pitch with GKs now included. Both teams are tasked with playing out from the back in possession and defending from the front out of possession. Pitch is split in half vertically so that neither team can play more than 4 consecutive passes in one half of the pitch. 
  • Play is started from the GK initially and opposition have to observe the withdrawal line (red cone) until GK distributes to FB to start.
  • Progress to any defender to receive first pass
  • Progress to any defender or midfielder to receive first pass
