Small Rondos (15 mins)
Equipment
- Balls, Bibs, Cones
Organization/Implementation
Small Rondo
5x5
- 3v1 or 4v1 Rondo or Keep-Away game
- No bibs required
- Player in the middle (defender) keeps a bib in their hand
- The 3 or 4 attackers on the outside try to keep the ball from the defender in the middle. The attackers can play 1 or 2 touch.
- If one of the attackers makes a "mistake" then the defender gives them (or drops) the bib and the attacker becomes the defender in the middle.
Small Rondo
10x10
2+2v2 Rondo
- 3 teams of 2 players each, bibs are required
- This is basically a 4v2 keep away with 2 teams (4) keeping the ball away from the 2 defenders in the middle
- if the 2 defenders in the middle can force the attackers into a mistake then they will change spots with the 2 outside attackers

3v2 (15 mins)
3v2 - 3 Attackers vs 2 Defenders
Equipment
- Balls, Bibs, Cones
Organization/Implementation
- 2 groups of players - Attackers & Defenders
-15x20 or 20x25 yard grid
- Server (one of the defenders that is not participating) serves the ball to one of the 3 attackers
- Objective for the 3 attackers is to get past the 2 defenders and stop the ball on the goal line to score a point
- Objective for the 2 defenders is to force the attackers into a mistake and get them to turn over possession. The ultimate objective for the 2 defenders is to create transition - win the ball and dribble to the opposting goal line with the ball under control to score a point.
Coaching Points
- All technical points from both defenders, but especially the first - Fast, Slow, Sideways, Low
- Depending on which attacker has the ball the defenders will pressure and cover at a certain angle and distance
- If the ball is in the central area they are compact centrally and looking to not get split - hopefully making play predictable and forcing play to one side or another
- If the ball is in a wide area - the 2 defenders look to isolate the 2 attackers and make it a 2v2 instead of a 3v2

4v2 w 2 (15 mins)
Equipment: Balls, Bibs, Cones
Rules/Objectives: The pitch is split into 2 playing areas with 4 attacking players in each box. Start with 4v2 in Box A, where players have to make 5 passes before transferring the ball to Box B. As the ball is transferred the 2 new defenders who were waiting in the rest zone enter Box B. After 5 passes switch again. If one of the attacking teams gives up possession then they become the defending team. The 2 defenders in the rest zone may intercept forward passes.
Coaching Points:
- Encourage attacking team to make the field as big (width and depth) as possible

4v2v2 (15 mins)
Equipment
- Balls, Bibs, Cones
Organization
- Activity can be played in a 10x10, 12x12 or 15x15 depending on the age and ability of the players
- Game is a 4v2v2
Implementation
- In the centre of the box 2 teams play 2v2 with 4 supporting/neutral players on the outside
- One team of 2 attacks and the other defends - the objective for the pair of attackers in possesion is to link up with each other but to also use the 4 outside/supporting/neutral players for support
- If the 2 attackers can link up 10 consecutive passes between themselves and/or the outside players they get a point.
- If one of the 2 defenders win the ball, they look to dribble outside the square to score a point and also to switch from defenders to attackers.
- Rotate the players on the outside with the players on the inside. Only the 2v2 players in the middle require bibs.
- The players on the outside can pass to one another but should be looking primariy to pass (find) the ball to the players on the inside.
Coaching Points
- The players on the outside are looking to support the players on the inside and retain possession
- Players on the inside should be moving and look to be proactive
Progression
1) Players on the outside can only pass to the players on the inside
2) Limit the outside players to one or two touch

See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
5v2 (15 mins)
Equipment
- Balls, Cones, Bibs
- Note - players do not wear any bibs - the 2 defenders in the middle keep the bib in their hand
Organization
- 5v2 keep away inside 15x15 yard grid (progression from 4v2 activity)
Implementation
- 5 attackers on the outside of the grid look to keep the ball away from the 2 defenders in the middle with an eye on connecting as many consecutive passes as possible
- If a defender get a touch on the ball, win the ball, or force the attackers into a mistake - that defender goes outside to become and attacker and the attacker who lost the ball etc. becomes a defender (gives the bib that they were holding in their hand to the attacker)
Coaching Points
- Coach good angles and distance of support - with each of the 4 supporting players always being available to the first attacker
Progression
- Defender needs to dribble outside of the grid in order to become an attacker - or if one defender can connect a pass with the other defender and get outside the grid, then both defenders will exit - the attacker that gave up the ball and the attacker to their right become defenders

4v2 - def (15 mins)
Equipment
- Balls, Bibs, Cones
Organization/Implementation
- 30x15 yard grid, split in half
- 4v2 keep away activity
- Working on the role of the first and second defender
- In the diagram the 4 attackers are trying to keep the ball away from the 2 defenders
- The first defender pressures A1 and archs her run to take away the pass to A2
- The second defender covers at a 45 degree angle and looks to take away the split pass to A3
- This makes play predictable giving the attacker, A1 only one pass to A4
- As the ball travels to A4 - R sprints to close down and Q drops in to cover
- If the 2 defenders force the attackers into a mistake, if the ball goes out of bounds, or if they can win the ball and play it over to their 2 waiting team mates, they, then become the attackers and the ball transfers to the other side and they play 4v2
- For each 5 consecutive passes the attackers make they score a point. If the 4 attackers can split the 2 defenders they get 3 points.
- Play for a pre-set amount of time. The team with the fewest points in the end wins.
Coaching Points
- Encourage communication between Q & R
- The ultimate objective for the 2 defenders is to try to not get split by the 4 attackers
