Multiple Rondos

Method:

  • Three rondos
  • Blue central is 4 v 2 , Orange outside rondos are 2 v 1 or 3 v 1 (depending on numbers)
  • Players start @ red cone. They run in 2's into the Blue rondo. Once they win the ball, they split. One player goes into the left rondo, the other into the right rondo
  • Once they win the ball there, one of the green players replaces them at the red cone and the next two players go into the 4 v 2

Coaching Points:

  • Good work rate!
  • Scanning - players on outside of rondos need to know when other players coming into their area
  • Communication - talking to each other, telling players where they should go next
  • Two players going into the blue rondo must work as a pair, blocking passing lanes and pressing

Transition Game (20 mins)

Method:

2 v 1

3 v 2

4 v 3

Coaching Points:

Defensively:

  • Closed down space quickly
  • Body shape - side on, showing player down one side, blocking passing lane, ready to go forward or backwards
  • Stay tall until get close to attacker then get low & side on
  • React to attacker's potential heavy touch. Tackle when appropriate
Attacking:

  • Good control, while dribbling @ speed, trying to use top of foot
  • Can free player create passing lane
  • Drive into space or @ player to commit them
  • Can the player on the ball find a pass or shoot on goal

Transitions:

  • Quick transition getting back to defend
  • Concentrate on transitions
  • When T2D, running back go towards goal & player with ball. Try to slow them down
  • Communication - decide which player going to tackle

Match - Defensive Shape

Method:

  • Defensive shape is built around having an extra defender v attacker. E.g. If one attacker, we have two defenders. If two attackers, we have three defenders
  • Play match as normal, using 'stop, stand still' to highlight where we might be in 1v1 or 2v2 situation

Coaching Points:

  • Defenders work as a pair, one marking/pressing and the other offering cover. If playing three at the back, the third would give balance
  • Defending starts at the front, so striker needs to use defensive techniques also
  • If one defender drives forward with the ball, we have an option to leave 1v1 at back or to get one of the midfielders to drop in and create 2v1.
  • Throws, for us, can create 1v1 at the back if a defender takes the throw. Consider allowing right & left midfielders to take the throw. They would have three options, striker, central midfielder or closest defender

Defending from our corner

Method:

Corner for Green team

Coaching Points:

  • Green defenders mark 2 v 1
  • One defender marking behind attacker, one marking in front. The player in front is stopping the attacker getting the ball played into their feet
  • Green player at front needs to make sure they don't get drawn to the ball, leaving 1v1
  • GK should be halfway between the edge of their box and the half way line

Reflection

REFLECTION:

  • Took players & coaches a while to get multiple rondos, but when they did it worked well. Lots of work in it
  • Transitional games worked well - again, once coaches were organized
  • Corners worked only ok. Quality of delivery not great, plus more imagination required if they can't get ball into box

RECOMMENDATIONS:

  • Corners Definity something to keep working on
  • Add variety to short corners as inability to get ball into box, plus not many players willing to head same
