Key Factors
- Set Position - triggered by the server (arm or leg being brought back) - balanced on balls of feet; legs shoulder width apart, knees slightly bent and over toes, hands and arms tucked in.
- The 'dive' - Set, step in to ball with appropriate leg (closest to the ball), bend at the knee with hands leading, head moves behind hands; hand shape is a 'W' using 'stop and lock' - appropriate hand for the dive is on the side (stop) with the other on top (lock). Controlled collapse to the ground (bend knee and go over the knee). Hands should finish in front of feet in order for the dive to be forward.
-Decision making - catch/deflect/parry.
-Positioning - in relation to the centre of the goal & the ball (straight line) in order to narrow the angle.
-Movement around goal - efficient footwork; short, sharp steps.
Organisation
GKs will work in pairs within a 2-3 yard gate (the goal) with 1 working GK and his partner being a server. Re-cap of low/medium diving from recent weeks with main focus on the technical elements of the dive. Server will stand around 3-4 yards away from the GK and will serve in the appropriate ways: - Underarm roll for the low dive, and an underarm throw for the medium dive. Six reps and the swap roles.
Progression: Footwork - Figure of 8 around the cones in order to focus upon that step in to the dive- again, six reps and swap roles.
Equipment (for two set ups)
-2 footballs
-6 spots.
