Partner Passing & Races (10 mins)

Partner Passing

Separate players into groups of two, with partners across the field from each other. If players are too close, you can set out an extra two lines of cones that players must strike behind. Teach the following techniques and then have the groups race to get a specified number of passes.

  • Indside of the foot (cup of the foot)
  • Outside of the foot (three outside toes)
  • Knuckle of the foot (hardest part of the feet)
Emphasize receiving and controlling the ball before passing rather than doing one-touch passes. You could add a restriction to the races that requires two touches for the pass to count for a point. For advanced players, challenge them to take their first touch to the left or right away from an imaginary defender.

Rondos/American Gladiators (15 mins)

American Gladiators

Two groups of players inside separate square playing areas. One player in the middle is the defender. The attackers try to keep the ball as long as they can. The defender must get a touch on the ball, then switching places with the player who lost the ball.

  • Receive and control the ball before passing, when possible.
  • Move off the ball to create a good angle for your teammate to pass to you.
  • Defender: Use good movement skills to stay balanced and facing the ball.
  • Advanced: Use disguise to move the defender and buy time.
Once teams have experienced success controlling and passing the ball, American Gladiators begins. Each team sends one defender into the opposition zone for one minute at a time. Whichever team achieves the longest pass string without the defender touching the ball wins. Once finished, send a new defender and repeat until everybody has been the defender.

2v1 to Goal (15 mins)

2v1 to Goal

Two lines of attackers and one line of defenders. When the coach says go, players enter the field of play, with attackers scoring on goal. If the defender wins the ball, they can score a point for their team by dribbling past the attacker lines.

  • Follow the soccer order of operations: Shoot, dribble, pass.
  • Give proper spacing as attackers, and move to create a good passing angle.
  • Advanced: Attack with your first touch to get into space quickly.
Add competition by having teams keep track of their score and switching defenders and attackers after a certain time or number of reps.
If this is too challenging for the attackers, add an attacker and play 3v1.
