Warm Up (5 mins)

Begin with some stretches for the arms, legs and back using the ball where possible

1) Footwork warm up (Going through the ladder to get the legs working each exercise repeat twice)

  • 1 foot in each gap
  • 2 feet in each gap
  • 2 feet forward 1 foot back 
  • Slalom 
  • 1 foot hopping (swap legs on 2nd set)
  • Sideways (swap sides on 2nd set)
  • Sideways up and down
  • Sideways hopping (Swap legs on 2nd set)

2) Work with the hands for reactions and hand eye coordination

  • Spike Ball
  • 2 touch no bounce (with hands only then progress to no hands)
  • 4 high catches (2 on each side back to back) done quickly to get moving and blood pumping (2 or 3 sets of this)

Diving Saves (10 mins)

  • Feeder does an under arm throw to their left for the keeper dive and catch the ball, ball it throw back to feed and get back up to make the next save on the other side.
  • After second keeper shuffle around cones to repeat the exercise
  • This is repeated until the last set of cones where after the final dive the feeder will volley the ball at the keeper to make a W catch.
Coaching Points:
  • Step into the dive the push off
  • Quick movement to get back up for the next save
  • Quick feet to get around the cone

Low-Diving Save (10 mins)

Keeper jumps over the hundle and makes a low diving save and get back up to jump over the next hundle

This is repeated over all the hundles until the end.
Coaching Points:

  • High Jump over the hundles
  • Feet planted and set to make the low diving save
  • Step into the low dive

Quick movement & save (10 mins)

Slalom through cones and a mid diving save
(4 times then swap sides)

Coaching Points:

  • Light on feet to move quickly
  • Keep chest facing forward to head to always be look at where the ball is
  • Don't cross legs over when shufling across to get set to dive
  • Try to catch the ball where possible

High balls (10 mins)

Keeper start at back post and lightly jog to centre of goal and then ball is served high into the air for the keeper to perform a high catch. 


Progressions:

  • Serve the ball in different way to replicate different kinds of aerial crosses into the box
  • Swap sides

Key Points:

  • Catch at the highest and safest point (elbows slightly flexed & see the ball into hands)
  • The 'W' Technique (Soft hands, Strong wrists)
  • Take off on 1 leg
  • Bring a knee up for protection
  • Land on 2 feet where possible
