Session Topic: Defending the Final Third - Low Block
Session Organisation:
- In this SSG practice, if the defensive team is able to win back possession of the ball they are to attack in free play against the oppositions goal. For the blue team an CAM has been introduced and for the Red team a CDM has been brought in to make it 9v9
Explanation
Blue team - defend the final third, deal with the attacking threat if possession is won play forward quickly on the counter attack to score
Red team must give Reds problems to solve. Build up play and combine with wingers and CM/CFs to score in the final third. Be creative and clinical.
'What Ifs' :
-The CM make underlaping runs into the box
- The winger cut inside to drag players out of position.
Challenges & Targets
Blues - Can possession be won and score in 10sec - IMPORTANT, SSS (supply, support, stretch) Can you push up with a higher press - IMPORTANT - distances between units - not to big.
Coaching Points:
Drop deep, keep narrow + compact
- Force opposition into wide areas
- Defend aerial duels
- Defend the box

- The team that the session is being centred around is the blue team (the defending team) who are set up in a 1-5-2 emulating a 1-5-2-1-2 in relation to an 11v11 formation. For the specific practice both strikers and the CAM will be taken out to make it a 8v8 for the defending team. The attacking team (Red) is set up in a 1-2-4-1 with the attacking team's defensive wings being tapered forcing a higher shape (front 5) in the specific practice. The Red team is emulating a 1-4-1-4-1 11v11 formation.
'What Ifs' :
- What if attacking team's striker drops deep to receive the ball
- What if attacking team are able to create wide overloads
Positional Roles:
- GK: Be loud in communication + dominate in defending 18 yd box
- CBs: stay narrow, compact and communicative around opposition movements / playing patterns
- WBs: stay narrow, compact and force play wide + identify wingers movements in behind
- CMs: stay narrow, compact and be wary of striker's movement dropping deep in between the two CM. force pressure and curve the pressure to one side and lock it in on that side of the field
