Stage 1 - 4 v 2 Rondo (15 mins)

SET UP:

15yd x 15yd grid. Balls & coach on outside to act as feeder if necessary. 3 sets of 2 players (total 6) ^Players inside the grid, playing 4 v 2 (if numbers need to be modified.. we can go as big as 5 v 3)

ACTIVITY:

The 4 attackers play keep away from the 2 defenders. Play continues for 1 minute. Attackers attempt to make as many passes as possible. Defenders lose a point if 5 consecutive passes for attackers. Defending loses 2 points each time they get split. This is an intense activity for the defenders.

COACHING POINTS:

Angle of approach: Curve your run and force play in one direction

Covering position: Read the first defender to see cover position. Avoid getting split (penetrating pass)

Recovering Runs: Recover straight back into the center when your man passes the ball

Speed of approach: Intensive effort to reduce the gap quickly to apply pressure and provide cover

Stage 1 - 2nd phase (20 mins)

SET UP:

10 activity grids to allow for competitive movement of winners. 20-25yds X 25 yds wide. Balls. Cones for grids. 2 min repetitions. Allow either stop ball on end line or create mini goals.

ACTIVITY:

This simple 2 v 2 continues to teach the basics of pressure and cover for the defense, while allowing the offense to practice drops, give and gos, overlaps, shielding off, and crossing runs (but this is not a primary focus). In this case, defender in green plays the ball into the offensive team in blue, and closes down. The second defender covers. Offense tries to pass the defense and stop the ball on the end line for a point. If the ball cannot be controlled at the end line or goes out of bounds, it is turned over. After scoring a point, the team that scores serves a ball into the other team. Play for about two minutes, and team with the highest score moves on to the next grid for another match up.

COACHING POINTS:

-Defense should work on showing the desired direction

-containing and finding the right moment (visual cue) to tackle (head down, bad touch, bad pass, negative ball)

-Communication (got ball, show right, drop, etc)

stage 2 - 2 v 2 to goal (3 v 3) (20 mins)

Organization: 2 18-yard boxes against each other. 4 min rotations (4 total repetitions). Each team should get 2 turns as both attackers and defenders

Instructions: The GK starts with passing the ball to the attacker (alternate sides). Then another defender and attacker comes in the field. (2vs2).

We play pinnies vs non pinnies

*If you score you get a point for your team

*if you defend the other team for 8 seconds with no shot on goal you get a point

*If transition/counter attack to small goals if defence wins the ball (4 seconds to score) you score a point. No points for just winning the ball!

* No shooting beyond 25yds to allow defenders to get repetitions of work.

*Team will remain throughout each repetition then switch (defenders become attackers, attackers become defenders)

Progress to 3 v 3 if needed

Coaching Points: Step up to pressure higher, Other defender slide in to cover, stay compact as a unit.

Good 1 v 1 defensive technique (speed of approach, angle of approach, body shape, etc)

Provide cover for pressure defender

Communication between defenders

Progressions: 3vs2, 3vs3 (if needed).

Stage 3 - 6 v 4 numbers down (15 mins)

half field. One goalkeeper. Coach plays balls in from halfway line. Set up 3 fields of play. Repetitions of 4 mins and 1min rest/drink

ACTIVITY:

Playing 6 v 4 (adjust #s accordingly - 7 v 5, 8 v 6 , etc) with numbers down for defenders. We play with an offside line to make the game more realistic due to the numbers down (and to give defenders a chance to actually defend).

*Defending later rather than early when there is no pressure on the ball in central areas/need to drop off.

*Can we show patience to keep the play out in front and not force the issue.

*Are we able to clear all kinds of balls (ground, air, quick, slow, bouncing)

*when do we force inside vs. outside

*Pass off horizontal runs/track vertical runs
