A series of Skill Breakdowns for Goalkeepers, from the FFA's Skill Acquisition Manual (2018). Focus points include general handling, 1v1 situations, shot stopping and striking the ball.

Session Organization: Equipment - 2 mini goals or 4 portable poles, at least 1 or 2 footballs + a GK Coach/Asst Coach. Use appropriately sized goals inside a grid approx. 15m x 7m (as a guide).
Explanation: Position 2 GKs as shown. Game starts when GK coach passes into the area for the Pink GK, who controls and looks to score past Yellow GK. As pass is played, Yellow GK decides whether to defend the space or protect the goal.
Scoring System: 1 point for making a clean save, 1 point for scoring a goal past the opposing GK.
Progression: Swap roles after each action and keep score.
Evaluation - Key Coaching Questions:
Pre-Action: Can you look to adjust position in relation to the ball? Can you get to the ball before the attacker?
Action: Can you stag big and patient? Can you win the ball if you identify a poor touch?
Post-Action: Can you secure the ball?
Key Coaching Words:
Adjust - Encourage GK to adjust to position and movement of the ball.
Set - Encourage GK to be set and still as attacker controls the ball.
Stay Big - Encourage GK to stay big and not commit too early.

Session Organization: 2 mini goals or 4 portable poles, at least 1 or 2 footballs + a GK Coach/Assistant Coach. Use appropriate sized goals inside a 15m x 7m area (as a guide).
Explanation: Position 2 GKs as shown. Game starts when GK coach passes the ball into Pink GKs feet, protecting the near post. Pink GK plays ball into the space to Yellow GK, who controls and then shoots ball towards the Pink GK's goal. Pink GK must adjust and get across to make the save.
Scoring System: Defending GK: 1 point for making a clean save. Attacking GK: 1 point for a quality serve into the opposing goal.
Progression: Swap roles after each action.
Evaluation - Key Coaching Questions:
Pre-Action: Can you look to adjust position in relation to the ball? Can you get behind the line of the ball?
Action: Can you select the correct technique to catch or parry the ball?
Post-Action: Can you secure the ball?
Key Coaching Words:
Adjust - Encourage GK to adjust to the position and movement of the ball.
Set - Encourage GK to be set and still as shot is taken.
Lead with the Hands - Encourage GK to be relaxed as they catch the ball.

Session Organization: 8 portable poles, at least 1 or 2 balls + a GK Coach/Asst Coach. Create 4 gates that are approx. 2m wide (as a guide).
Explanation: Position 2 GKs as shown, game starts when GK coach passes to the Pink GK. As the ball is played in to the Pink GK, the Yellow GK has to move behind one of their passing gates (as shown). Pink Gk looks to control the ball and identify where the Yellow GK is, shifting to pass through the gate to the Yellow GK (as shown). Yellow GK receives the ball and passes back to the coach to restart the next sequence.
Scoring System: 1 point for quality serve into the occupied passing gate, 1 point for quality control and pass back to the coach (from receiving GK behind gates).
Progression: Swap roles after each action or after a series of actions.
Evaluation - Key Coaching Questions:
Pre-Action: Can you face your target and keep your head up to see your opponent?
Action: Are you able to position your body square to the target?
Post-Action: Can you transfer your weight forward?
Key Coaching Words:
Face Forward - Encourage players to face the target.
Scan - Encourage players to keep head up with vision on their opponent.
Follow Through - Encourage players to transfer weight forward in follow through.

Skill Breakdown - General Handling (10 mins)

Explanation: Position 2 goalkeepers as shown. Game starts when coach passes to pink goalkeep for a catch at the near post. Pink goalkeeper then plays the ball into space for the yellow goalkeeper, who controls the ball then shoots towards the pink goalkeeper's goal.
Scoring System: Defending GK: 1 point for a clean save.
