-The split team into two lots of six players. 2 defenders on either side of the grid. Adjust to suit numbers.
-Defenders have a zone 15m x 20m (shaded area) to defend.
Explanation:
-Ball start at either end, position #1 or #3.
-Defender closes the space down as quick as possible.
-Attackers have the to beat the defender either on the outside or down the inside.
-Once he/she passes the defender a ball is played to the awaiting team mate in red.
-Red Recieves the ball and plays to a wide player who then recieves the ball and takes on the defender. The pattern continues.
-Change the defenders regularly (every 3-5mins)
Step up/down:
- Defender is passive only. Until attackers are confident taking them on the outside/inside.
-Reduce the defenders space to increase pressure on the attackers allowing them to be closed down quicker, decreasing the attacker decision making time.
Hidden Learning:
-Defenders look to close the gap quick as possible. Body position, balance, on the toes, direct the attackers towards the side line.
Progression B:
- Player passing the ball can make a supporting run to make a potential 2 v 1. Defender has to now make a decision to attacker the ball or cut off the forward pass.
- Once the defender has been beaten the supporting player then returns to position #2 or #4.

Core Skill:RWTB
Specific Aspect: In this session I aim to improve the Running with the ball into space to commit defenders.
Key Principal: Combination Play
Player Tasks:
-Try to run at space between defenders.
-Be direct and attack the space with speed.
-If a defender doesn’t close you down, continue to run forward toward space or the goal.
-If a defender closes you down, get close to him before passing to a team-mate and continuing your run.
-Continue your run and support your team mate after passing.
-Communicate with team mate.
-Use change of direction (COD) and change of pace (COP).
Organisation:
- Grid 20m x 20m
-5m zone either end.
-4 x markers
Explanation:
-"BLUE" passes the ball to start the practice.
-"RED" take his/her 1st touch in the direction they want to go and processed to the end zone.
-Once the "RED" players stops the ball, another "RED" player takes the ball to the other zone.
-"BLUE" becomes the defender.
-If the "RED" player loses the ball to the "BLUE" defender, the "BLUE" then becomes the attacker & pattern continues.
Step up/down:
-Reduce the size of the grid to increase the intensity of the practice.
