Each team sets up at one end of the field in two lines (off the field). the first two players from each line play making a 2v2 game to large goals + goalkeepers. Put a cone/flag at the centermost point which teams are restricted to. Rotate your Goalkeepers.
reenforce shooting technique (toe down, ankle locked, strike middle of ball with laces) .
Instructions:
1. goalkeeper introduces ball to his team, and they have 5 seconds to get a shot off (dictate vocally with a countdown to start, then let teams count eachother down once they've got it)
2. defending team can pressure/cover on THEIR HALF ONLY. they can block shots to help the goalkeeper (goalkeeper should be using techniques taught last week)
3. teams that get scored on: exit the game & get back in line. teams that score: get a new ball & 5 seconds countdown to shoot.
4. if the ball goes out after a marathon sequence, get 6 new players on and pick a team to put a ball on
Coaching Points:
1. laces for power (inside for accuracy)
2. toe down (ankle locked)
3. strike the middle of the ball
4. follow through towards target (advanced: jump & land on striking foot during follow through)
Success Criteria:
1. players are getting repitition of striking technique with proper technique
2. shots are being taken quickly from open spaces of the field
3. goalkeepers are saving the ball with their hands when possible (switch goalies that save with feet)
4. defenders recall pressure/support and are trying to block shots
Striking Technique
depending on the level of group, vary the distances between partners (10-20 yards apart dep. on level)
Instructions: get a partner.
stand across from them. (give them cones as reference points).give them enough space in between one another so there is minimal balls being shot into others' space.
Coaching Points:
a. prepare ball (touch WIDE of hip) with a positive touch (back in direction you want to play)
b. contact ball with laces (otherwise known as 2nd knuckle) you can show equivalent on hand
c. strike ball with ankle locked (flex your ankle muscles). not a wobbly foot .
d. plant foot pointed at target (just like passing!)
e. ask -when is the kick over? (they will likely say when you kick it). stress the idea of following through.
f. balancing knee is slightly bent and torso is leaning slightly forward
Success Criteria:
1. ball is being received with ability to next strike. (not shooting with ball directly underneath us)
2. shots are with laces, towards teammate, and central ball contact is made. (backspin=loose ankle)
3. players achieve a high level of repetition in a short amount of time
Progression: players with a high level of accuracy and power can be shown how to "land on striking foot" for more power
Regression: physically assist those struggling with mechanics by checking their locked ankle, swing their leg to help them understand bringing it back before following through. consider bringing distance closer together if struggling with power.
