Sliding Rondo (15 mins)

Organisation : Players: 5v2 / 6v2 Grid size: 20 yards x 10 yards

Instructions: Players form circle to create passing pattern.

You can stand outside the grid a foot or so but the idea is to keep the circle shape and not make the circle larger. Create 2 grids side by side.

Key Points & Objectives:

Players look to complete 4-5 passes and then play their teammates into the open grid. The group at the point all has to run into the open grid following the pass. Players do not have to run keeping the shape of a circle. Once they get into the next grid they can regain the shape of the circle and look to complete 4-5 passes again before sending ball into the open grid. The players in possession can make more than four passes in the same grid but they can’t play in the open grid before four passes are completed. You can change the number of passes and players to adjust for skill level.

High Intensity , free flowing football related warm up drill.

Team Task

Work efficient combination play, by supporting the ball carrier and encouraging supporting angles for wall pass.

Player Tasks

Arc runs when looking for return pass

Constant communication amongst playing group.

Remain focussed and organised

Coaching Points

Work on 2 touch, progressing to 1 touch where possible.

Notes:

Change directions after 7-8 minutes to see if players are prepared and can adapt to change.

Change inside receiving players after 2-3 minutes for static receiving drills where players don't follow their pass.

You can start with 2 balls only and progress once players have adapted to exercise and speed

Variations: Inside players can switch places amongst themselves also to remain on the move and progressive.

SAQ (15 mins)

Illinois Agility Test - SAQ

The Illinois Agility Test (Getchell, 1979) is a commonly used test of agility in sports. It measures the ability to change position and direction. The length of the course is 10 meters and the width (distance between the start and finish points) is 5 meters. Four cones are used to mark the start, finish and the two turning points. Another four cones are placed down the center an equal distance apart. Each cone in the center is spaced 3.3 meters apart. Subjects should lie on their front (head to the start line) and hands by their shoulders. On the 'Go' command the stopwatch is started, and the athlete gets up as quickly as possible and runs around the course in the direction indicated, without knocking the cones over, to the finish line, at which the timing is stopped.

Possession & Transitioning (20 mins)

Organisation: 4 Playing areas varying in size based on level and fitness requirements

2 Teams (6v6 / 7v7 / 8v8)

Team in possession look to keep the ball for a minimum of 7 passes against 2 defending players before transitioning into next area. Once in the next playing area, another defender may enter creating a 7v3. Team in possession must combine for another 6 passes before transitioning into the 55x45 playing area. Send in another defender and team in possession look to combine again for another 5 passess before transitioning into the full half pitch releasing the remaining defenders.

If team defending win the ball, quickly transition into attacking formation and opposing team become defenders.

Coaching points: The game is fun, but should be played at a high intensity and fitness conditioning.

Progression: Goals and a keeper plus wide channels can be added to create a realistic game scenario.

Counter Attacking with Speed (20 mins)

Organisation: 16-18 players 4 Teams Defenders / Midfielders / Attackers (4 various coloured bibs)

(Area 35x30yds) Reduce playing area based on conditioning requirements(12-15minutes)(1min rest) 3v3 + 6 (3x3min/1min Rest)

Instructions: 4v4+2 Neutral (#8 & #10) in playing area attempt to score by playing the ball into goal zone at opposite end.

When the ball is passed into a goal zone the team that passed the ball stays on and defends against the team which received the pass which enters the field. If the ball is intercepted that team then plays to the Goal Zone they are attacking.

Restrictions/Progressions: 3 Touch 2 touch / 1 touch to score into the end goal zone. Nothing above head height. Must play a bounce pass before a goal can be scored. Max 5 passes to get ball played into end zone.

Coaching Points:

1.Quick to transition from attacking to defending.

2.Communication to pick up markers on defence.

3.Break out quickly from the Goal Zones (Counter Attack) to catch the other team in transition.

4.Good attacking runs to disrupt the defending teams organization.

5.Close down the ball carrier quickly.

Key Points:

Teams work on both attacking and defending and transitions needs to be quick. High intensity with many scoring opportunities and decision making for the players. The game is continuous without breaks which keeps all the players involved.
