Questions for players:

1. How can you make sure you are providing an option for your teammmate with the ball? Move to a spot where a defender isn't between you and the ball

2. When is it a good time to dribble? When you have space or in a 1v1 situation

4. Where can you go to be open for your teamate when they have the ball? To a space where there are no defenders between you and the ball.

1v1 Escape from defender and finish (15 mins)

Objective: Improve scoring in 1v1 situations with goalkeeper under pressure

Set Up:

Use an area approximately half the length of the field and the width of the penalty area. Place a 5x5 yard box in the middle of the playing area. Use two full sized goals with goalkeepers.

Players are split into two teams and start on opposite sides of the square as shown in the diagram. Defensive team (red in diagram) starts with the ball and initiates the game by playing to the attacker who receives the ball in the 5x5 area. Defender starts to defend as soon as ball is passed

Player receiving the ball chooses which goal to attack (they can score on either), dribbles toward that goal and tries to score while the defender and goalkeeper try to prevent the attacker from scoring.

Once ball goes out or the defender wins the ball the next group goes. Retrieve ball after shooting. Games should be fast and shouldn't last longer than about 7-10 seconds. Make sure players switch roles so that both teams get to attack.

Coaching Points:

  • How should you receive the ball? Inside of foot, into space towards goal you want to score on.
  • Should you dribble fast or slow to get away from defender? Fast but still keep
  • Where do you want aim when shooting? One of the corners away from the goalkeeper
  • How do you know where the goalkeeper is located? Look up while dribbling to know where to aim

2v1 Receiving with back to goal (20 mins)

Set Up: Two 20x20 Grids to keep players active and a good work/rest ratio

1. Attacker A, with the ball facing goal plays Attacker B 10 yards away with their back to the defender and goal. Attacker B then controls it and plays it back to Attacker A. The defender only starts defending once the return pass has been played

2. Attacker B, after playing the return pass, instantly opens up wide to provide a passing lane. Attacker A drives at the defender at speed

3. Attacker A, after engaging the defender, then has the choice to pass to Attacker B making a forward run into space or dribble and shoot

Progression: Add an offside rule and tech players to adjust movement to get open and stay onside.

Coaching Points:

Attacker A:

  • How should you take your first touch? Forward so you can engage the defender immediately.
  • Dribble at defender to force them to make a choice
  • How do you know when to pass? If the defender stops you from dribbling towards goal.
  • How do you know when to dribble and try to score? When the defender stops me from passing to my teammate.
Attacker B:
  • What should you do after you pass the ball? Get wide to provide good angle for your teammate to pass you the ball
  • How should you take your first touch if your teammate passes you the ball? Across body in the direction you want to go (most likely towards goal in this scenario).

Once scoring opportunity is created player in possession should try to look up to see the goalkeeper's position before shooting.

The main focus for today is to encourage movement from players without the ball that help their team/teammates to create opportunities to score. We will need to help players recognize good times to dribble vs good times to pass or shoot during the game

Coaching Points:

  • How do you get open for a teammate? Move to a space where there is no defender between you and the ball
  • How do you find open teammates? Dribbling with head up to and looking at both teammates and where the defenders are positioned
  • How can you receive the ball to see more of the field? Across body, opening hips to face the direction you want to play after receiving ball
  • When is a good time to dribble? When you have space
  • When is a good time to pass? When the defender is close to me and my teammate is open
  • What should you do before shooting? Look at the goalkeeper so you know the correct part of the goal to try and aim your shot
