Best Defender

Best Defender

One defender (blue) in the middle of the field to start. One attacker (red) starts the round by moving. The attacker attempts to reach the end line without being tagged. If the attacker makes it, they become the new defender. If the defender tags the attacker, they stay on as defender. How many rounds can the defender win in a row?

Coaching Points:

  • Proper defensive stance (hips low, on the toes, ready to move)
  • Run up but slow down before reaching the attacker to limit their space and speed
  • Push the attacker toward either sideline by positioning your body on either side of the attacker and limiting their space
  • Use proper body positioning rather than going after the attacker and trying to take the ball right away - be patient!

Defender serves the ball to the attacker to start. The attacker attempts to dribble under control through either of the two gates. If the defender wins the ball, they dribble over the attackers' starting line to score.

Coaching Points:

  • Proper defensive stance (hips low, on the toes, ready to move)
  • Run up but slow down before reaching the attacker to limit their space and speed
  • Push the attacker away from the goal they're trying to score on, but don't overcommit
  • Use the endlines to trap the attacker and limit their space
  • Use proper body positioning rather than going after the attacker and trying to take the ball right away

Defenders serve a ball to the attackers to start. Attackers may score on either goal (could be a cone goal). If the defender wins possession, they may dribble over the attackers' line to score. Have players or teams keep track of their score to make it more competitive.

Coaching Points:

  • Push the attacker away from both goals if possible with proper positioning
  • Push the attacker toward either sideline to keep them away from the goals
  • Position yourself to force the attacker one direction, but also block the goal too
  • Rather than running forward and trying to win the ball, can the defender be patient and choose the right time to make a tackle?

Add Challenge: Once players are successful in 1v1, add another defender and attacker to make it 2v2. Can the defensive team isolate the player on the ball and trap them between each other or the sidelines?

Split your training group into two evenly balanced teams and play regular soccer. Challenge the players to use what they practiced in training and bring those skills and concepts into the full game. Continue coaching players as they play, and feel free to freeze the game at times to show what you wish the players to see and do.

Rules:

  • Throwins from sidelines
  • No goalkeepers
  • Defensive team retreats to halfway on goal kicks
  • Kickoff in the center after every goal
