Technical Practice

Set up/Organisation/Description:

  • 1 GK working
  • 2 or 3 players required in passage depending on option

Instructions/Explanations:

  • Option 1:

    - GK receives from CDM and plays out to CB who has dropped to support

    - CB becomes winger (loss of possession) who then plays a wide cross in for GK to deal with

  • Option 2:

    - Same as option 1 but players move higher up pitch to replicate pass to full back

    - Cross then comes from a deeper area

  • Option 3:

    - GK takes strike from #9 as first phase

    - If GK holds then they distribute to defender via roll or throw (Defender can move position to trigger scan and decision making on appropriate type of distribution)

    - This player becomes opposition winger who can drive to by line/ into box to play cut back

    - #9 and CAM attack cut back (1 running across CB; 1 dropping off or arriving late at the edge of the box)

Progression(s)

  • Alternate sides each rep
  • Add a press to deal with the pass back
  • #9 can first put passive pressure on GK then attack the cross as active pressure
  • Wingers can cut in and strike in addition to crossing or driving to cut ball back

Game-Related Practice

Set up/Organisation/Description:

  • 2 goals x 11 aside (1 on goal line; 1 on edge of D at opposite end of 18 yard box)
  • 1 GK in each goal; 2 wingers (1 on each wing); 2 attackers (#9 and CAM) as well as 1 defender

Instructions/Explanations:

  • GK starts play by passing out wide to a winger
  • Winger then crosses on opposite goal for striker and CAM to attack
  • Winger at opposite side can make run to back post
  • If GK collects cross they can start counter by distributing to opposite winger to cross at other goal
  • If ball is cleared or misses target then GK defending cross restarts play
  • If a GK conceeds opposite GK resumes play
  • GK with least goals conceeded after 3 mins stays in goal; losing GK rotates

Progression(s)

  • Offside rule applies
  • Winger can cut in and strike or drive into box for cut back
  • Winger does not need to cross to opposite goal when receiving ball; they can now attack either goal (causes GK to reposition after distributing as if loss of possession has occured)
