THE SESSION:
This wave practice focuses on defenders being aware of their individual responsibilities whilst operating within a defensive unit.
Set up 3 x boxes on the edge of the penalty area. Goal and Goalkeeper in the penalty area and 3 x Defenders positioned within each box. Attackers positioned on the edge of each box and have to pass the ball before deciding when to attack through a designated box. Defenders attempt to recognise when to press the receiving player within their own box, as the remaining Defenders also focus on their individual movement to offer cover and balance. Defenders are responsible for defending their own box and any player that enters this area. If Attackers successfully enter the boxes they can then attack the goal as a team. If Defenders regain possession they play to the awaiting Attacking team for 1 point. Once the phase is over, the Attacking x 3 become Defenders and the Defenders join the next wave of Attackers. Alternatively a time limit can be set for the Defending team to defend before changing roles.
PROGRESSIONS:
- Remove all box lines
KEY MESSAGES/POINTS:
Pressure the Attacker
As an individual, defenders should accelerate on the approach and angle the body away from goal when closing down, before slowing down at the last yard whilst maintaining on their toes to be ready for any quick moves or tricks by opponent.
Body shape
Players should work on body shape on an angle and use their arms for balance whilst jockeying to show defenders one way.
Individual movement
Individual defenders need to maintain balance and agility to be aware of attacker, team mates and the position of the ball whilst being in a position to challenge for the ball.
Use LFC role models and values

THE SESSION:
- Coach (C) says go, the first 2 players from each team jog into the middle between the 2 red cones
- At this point the players stay on their toes using their body to push against the other player staying in between the red cones
- The C will then shout 'Forwards' or 'Backwards' at this point it is a race between the 2 players to the white line in front or behind them
- Competition
PROGRESSION:
- add 'Left' and Right' commands
- add a ball on each line. First player to get there has to turn and dribble to opposite line, other player defends. If defender wins they try to dribble back to original line e.g command is 'backwards', red gets to the ball at B and tries to dribble to F. If white wins it they dribble back to B
