This session focuses on the importance of transferring the ball in a game, using a slap hit as the skill focus. The aim is to maintain possession and keep width on the pitch.

Cross My River - Stick & Ball

SET UP

  • Indicate a start line and a finish line.
  • Player in the middle is the catcher.
  • The catcher decides who is to cross the river. Eg, Cross my river if you're wearing orange shoes. Cross my river if you have blonde hair.
  • When a player is caught they join the catcher in the middle to increase the number of catchers.

Skill Focus - Slap Hit

  • Q&A
  • When do we want to transfer the ball? (Opposition, congestion)
  • Why do we want to transfer the ball? (Maintain possession, transfer to then move forward)
  • Where are we transferring the ball from/to? (Talk about channels on the pitch)
  • What is the most successful type of pass used to transfer the ball? (Slap hit) - Why? (Accurate and fast).
  • Skill focus - slap hit.
  • Start in pairs, static slap hits.
  • COACHING POINTS
  • Hands together, right meets left at the top of the stick.
  • Stick starts on the ground and finishes on the ground.
  • Stand side on to your partner.
  • Ball is a 'stick and a step' away from your right foot.
  • Bend your knees and get low.

Saucer

  • Progression -
  • Team up with another pair to form a group of four.
  • Replicate positions on the pitch - Eg. Two full backs, left and right defender.
  • Pass the ball in one direction. Switch players every few rounds so they all get a turn at the long pass.
  • FOCUS -
  • Transfers should be fast and accurate.
  • Stay low to receive and pass, 2-3 touches of the ball.
  • Make sure your body and feet are in a good position to receive and pass - don't have your back to the ball or the player you are going to pass to.

Transfer under pressure

  • Team up with another group of four.
  • Set up a goal behind the saucer of defenders.
  • Four players in the saucer need to transfer the ball from one side to the other to score a point. They can go back and forth as much as they like.
  • Two players are attackers (two players are resting).
  • If the attackers win possession, their aim is to score a goal.
  • Rotate the two attackers.
  • Play a few rounds and swap defenders and attackers over.
  • This should look and feel like a game; players are not stuck rigidly in their positions.
  • Marking out the left and right channels will help players not drift into the middle of the pitch and lose width.

End to End Game

SET UP

4 attackers (white & blue) vs 2 defenders (orange).

1 ball.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

  • Attackers need to pass from one side (end zone) to the other to score a point. Players in the middle can be used but if there is a clear pass from one end to the other, the quickest route should be taken.
  • Attackers can pass the ball back to the player it started with.
  • If a defender intercepts the ball, they need to make a pass to their teammate to score the point.
  • Keep rotating players in the end zones and switch defenders.
  • Players in the end zones can move around in those zones but are not allowed into the centre.
IS IT WORKING?

No -

  • Increase the size of the playing area so that the defenders have more space to defend.
  • Increase the size of the end zones to give the attackers a larger target.
  • Overload the attacking team in the middle to create 3 v 2. The far end zone player could be allowed into the centre to help before receiving or carrying the ball to the end zone.
Yes -
  • Set a time challenge for the attackers to move the ball from one end zone to the other. Or see how many times they can get the ball from end to end repeatedly in 2 minutes.
  • Overload the defence to challenge the attackers.
  • Add constraints - eg. two touches on the ball or passing off right foot.
