Function (30 mins)

Organisation:

 - An area marked out by cones approximately 25m long x 20m wide (illustrated by shaded area)

- 8 players needed: 5 on red team (attacking); 3 on blue team (defending)

- Lots of balls by blue CF

Objective:

- Can the blue CM's prevent the ball from getting to the red CF

Coaching the blue team, the function begins with one CB passing to the other then passing it into any red CM. The red CM's have to try and get the ball to the red CF without any assistance from the CB's (creating a 2 v 2 & 1). The blue CF is passive initially, then introduced as the function progresses. The red CF can move anywhere along the line of cones.

What problems / progressions can the red team create for the blue team to solve?

- Can the red CM's pass the ball to the red CF?

- Can the red CM's combine with a CB to go 'around' the blue CM's and pass the ball to the red CF?

- Can the red team play 'over' the blue CM's and into the red CF?

- Can the red CF come into the area and look to receive the ball in a deeper position?

Introduce the blue CF and effect them also in order to work as a unit.

'Coach the individual and the unit'

- Provide coaching detail for each player and ensure they are all effected

Defensive key points:

- Pressure on the ball: where; how; when; who?

- Communication

- Angles and distances of support

- Compact and narrow shape

- Tracking runners

- Decision making

Key coaching point:

- 'Checking your shoulder' to see where the red CF is positioned in order to make better decisions.

Coaching process:

- Observe the play

- Diagnose the problem

- Recreate the situation

- Provide feedback (and provide demonstration if needed)

- Rehearsal of performance

- Play live

SSG (30 mins)

Organisation:

- 3/4 pitch, narrowed by 2 metres each side from the touchline

- The pitch is also tapered at one end to allow for no FB's playing for the red team

- 9v9

- Blues formation is 4-2-1-1 (would be 4-2-3-1)

- Reds formation is 2-4-1-1 (would be 4-4-1-1)

SSG

Playing 9 v 9, coaching the blue team.

Condition the blue team to score within 6 seconds after winning possession.

Create problems for the blue team to solve e.g. initially try and play directly through the midfielders and into the feet of the red CF's.

Progressions:

- Can the red team play around the blue FB's in an attempt to score?

- Can they then pass the ball over the blue CM's into the red CF's?

How do the blue team solve these problems?

Manage the red team in order to create further problems for the blue team? For example, saying to the red CF / number 9 to stay high and see the numbers on the back of the two blue CB's tops to stretch the play.

What if's?

- The two red CM's drop deep in an attempt to draw out the two defensive MF's for the blue team? What should the blue team do?

- The red CF / number 10 drops deep to create a 3v2 overload in MF against the blue team? What should the blue team do?

- Reinforce the defensive key points (as per the function)

- Advise the blue team to  'Make the pitch as small as possible' so the red team are unable to pass the ball effectively.

- Protect the central area of the pitch

Remember to effect the individual and the unit - players on the ball / around the ball / away from the ball
