1st League Game of the season. We do not have any tactical insight to this A3 team so we will come in with the mentality to play aggressive, force mistakes in their half of the field and be attack minded in possession.
OUT OF POSSESSION: a high 1-4-3-3 but with a mild, compact press.
IN POSSESSION: a well drilled 1-4-2-3-1 with our midfielders offset to create more passing options than we normally have. Focus on getting the ball out to the wide areas and create combos, give n' go's, numerical advantage in those wide areas.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
OVERALL TECHNICAL THEME: DEFENSIVE SCANNING TO IDENTIFY PASSING LANES TO CUT OFF
OVERALL TACTICAL THEME: CUTTING OFF PASSING LANES FROM OPPOSITION HALF INTO OUR OWN HALF. FORCE MISTAKES TO WIN THE BALL IN GOOD POSITIONS. WE MUST GET COMPACT AND STAY COMPACT
BE PATIENT AND DISCIPLINED WHEN DEFENDING AND BE STRONG WHEN NEEDED!!
**OUR SHAPE WHEN WE DON'T HAVE THE BALL IS BASICALLY A 1-4-3-3 (IF THEY PLAY OUT FROM THE BACK)
TOP PRIORITIES:
1) INDIVIDUAL DEFENDING - PATIENCE AND TECHNIQUE
2) SMALL GROUP DEFENDING - DISCIPLINE AND PATIENCE. GET COMPACT AND STAY COMPACT AS WE PROGRESS THROUGH THE PHASES
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
DEFENDERS
**-Be SUPER PATIENT when defending in wide areas in 1v1 battles. Goal is to DELAY as long as possible
- Recovery and delay - we defend centrally towards the goal FIRST then out to the ball!
*- Back line staying connected and applying basic PCB principles
*- Defend centrally first. Defend narrow and compact and if we must yield any ground, yield the ground in the wide areas.
*- Recognizing the moments when to switch to the pressure defender vs the covering defender.
* DO NOT allow any balls through the back line centrally....make everything go wide! (Zone 14 - REMEMBER)
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
MIDFIELDERS
**Get the right team shape across the middle of the pitch and maintain the shape as we transition from side to side and front to back (4-3-3). FORCE THEM TO GO LONG WITH THE BALL
**DEFENSIVE SCANNING - to identify passing lanes to cut off. To see where defensive support is located
#7, #9 & #11 - Look for passing lanes to cut off into the center midfield areas. STAY CONNECTED TO EACH OTHER. DEFEND EARLIER!! ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY ARE PLAYING OUT FROM THE BACK
**When we lose the ball, how quickly do we mentally and physically transition into a defensive mindset and position? CLICK MOMENTS!
- Critical that we apply pressure but recover centrally (DO NOT CHASE THE BALL HORIZONTALLY ACROSS THE PITCH!)
When we win the ball back, can we find open players (even if that means going backwards for the purpose of recycling the ball and starting the attack again).
FIRST PASSES ARE CRITICAL IN TRANSITION AFTER WINNING POSSESSION! MAKE THEM SURE
THIS IS SUPER CRITICAL - DON'T TRY TO BE TOO FANCY WHEN WE WIN THE BALL BACK
DEFEND WELL, THEN PLAY IN THE DIRECTION WE ARE FACING AND FIND OPENINGS!!
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
ATTACKERS
#7 & #11 starting position when out of position is very narrow to make the center of the field congested.
#7, #11 & #9 - NEW RESPONSIBILITY TO CONNECT TO PREVENT OPPONENT HAVING TIME ON THE BALL AND EASY PATHS INTO MIDFIELD
If the #9 makes a decision to press hard from the front, all the attackers and midfielders must match the intensity to take away passing lanes and try to win the ball high up the field.
#9 IS THE TRIGGER/VISUAL CUE THAT DICTATES WHETHER WE PRESS AS A TEAM.
+++++
TRIGGERS FOR THE PRESS: ball goes negative, player dribbling back towards their goal, bad sideways pass,
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
ATTACKING PLAY WHEN IN THE AREA OF THE FIELD WE CALL CLOSE TO GOAL (UP TO 35YDS AWAY FROM GOAL)
TECHNICAL PRIORITY: SCANNING THE FIELD - AS WE REINFORCED IN RECENT PRACTICES!
QUALITY OF THE 1ST TOUCH & PASSING TO CREATE OPENINGS
IF WE DON'T IMPROVE IN THIS AREA WE CAN NEVER ACHIEVE ANY OTHER TACTICAL PRIORITIES!!!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
ATTACKERS - WHEN WE WIN THE BALL HIGH UP THE FIELD, BE ATTACK MINDED AND GO TO GOAL. DON'T BE AFRAID TO SHOOT!
1. SCANNING
2. QUICK MOVEMENT
-What comes first? the run or the pass?THE RUN gives visual cues to our teammates
-How do we make sure our teammates are aware of our movement?(the speed/intention of the movement & communication)
- What kind of movement is most likely to unbalance the defenders and create space behind the defense (angled runs at speed). Change of speed and change of direction!
-When you make a pass horizontal, find a new opening vertically or away from the ball (rotation of other players into the space)
3. ACCURATE PASSING
- don't sacrifice accuracy for speed of passing!
* this is an area that needs dramatic improvement if we are to get better as a team!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
MIDFIELDERS - MINIMIZE UNFORCED ERRORS!
**Look for opportunities to get the ball out to the wide areas or up to our #9 in higher areas of the pitch!
** Focus is going to be VERY HEAVY on our technical improvement WHEN CLOSE TO GOAL WHEN TIME AND SPACE IS AT A MINIMUM:
1. SCANNING - See attacking above
1. THE QUALITY OF OUR FIRST TOUCH?
-can we recognize where the defensive pressure is coming from?
- can we head in the direction we want to pass with our first touch?
- Does our first touch set us up for the pass we want to make next?
- Spatial awareness - do we know the space we have and how to use it effectively
** The QUALITY & DIRECTION of your first touch really sets the stage for maintaining possession.
2. THE QUALITY OF OUR PASSING?
- How accurate is our passing? do we play the ball to the correct foot of the receiving player?
- Is the weight of the pass correct to either lead them into space or give them the best chance to get a quality first touch when receiving?
- can we manage the balance between short accurate passing and longer range passing to switch the point of attack?

SET PIECES
ATTACKING:
What are we trying to achieve in different moments of the game?
FREE KICKS - Byron or Ben takes kicks closer to the goal
- if we are inside 40yds from the goal - can we create an attacking moment by putting the ball in a dangerous area.
- if we are inside 25yds - can we take a good strike on goal ensuring that we make the GK work (DO NOT PUT THE BALL OVER THE BAR OR MISS THE GOAL ENTIRELY)
-if we are OUTSIDE 40 yds (or conditions do not allow a good ball into the box) WE POSSESS the ball (only exception, if we are losing and it is towards the end of the game - we might pump the ball in the box then) - DO NOT MAKE ME HAVE TO CALL ANYONE OUT ON THIS!!!
CORNER KICKS - Byron or Ben will take depending on who is in the game.
- let's try to mix up our corner kick repetoire!
Veg = All on the line.
PKs - Ben, Austin, Quino or Byron (in that order depending on who is on the field)
DEFENDING SET PIECES
ORGANIZED QUICKLY ON SET PIECES - Our set pieces are a priority; make genuine efforts to win the ball first in defending situations.
DO NOT LET THE BALL BOUNCE!! Bouncing soccer balls in our defensive half/third will be absolutely destructive for us!
Recognize mismatches, recognize strongest players, shape of the wall (tallest players in the direct shooting line, etc, etc). Man to man on corners. High on the 18 yd line for free kicks (TRACK RUNNERS!!!!)
WIN THE PHYSICAL BATTLE!!!
DEFEND IN THE 1ST PHASE, 2ND PHASE, 3RD PHASE AND BEYOND - DO NOT BE A BALL WATCHER AND LOSE TRACK OF YOUR OPPONENT!!
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Meat = 1-6 players find their spot (make sure way overhit corners are covered from the back post and beyond.
