Judge distance for how deep the back line should (25 mins)

In this practice discussion with the keeper we arrange where and how deep he wants to defenders to be when dealing with cross and get into the habit of calling out the number for distance and certain areas the ball would be for crosses before putting crosses into the box and look to repliate game like crossing situations.

Progressions:

  •  Place the ball in different spots to replicate different kinds of aerial crosses into the box
  • Swap sides

Key Details to help the keeper understand where he wants to backline to drop:

  • 18! (edge of box)
  • 12! (penalty spot)
  • 9! (halfway between penalty spotand 6-yard box)
  • 6! (6-yard box)

Coaching Points:

  • Start Position in relation to the ball central in the goal
  • If cross is a in swing look to be closer to goal line
  • If cross is a out swing look to be off the goal line
  • 1st Priority DEFEND THE GOAL
  • 2nd Priority DEFEND THE SPACE between keeper & defedners
  • Stance needs to be positive (open body to ball and rest of the pitch, on the toes/front foot ready to come for the ball or shuffle across)
  • Assessment the flight of the ball
  • Make a Decision whether to come for the ball or let defenders deal with it and stick to the decision
  • Communication Early, Loud, Clear, Calm & Concise

Technique when keeper is coming for the ball:

  • Angle & Speed of approach (quickest & shortest route to ball)
  • Timing & angle of take off (take off inside leg if possible)
  • Catch at the highest and safest point (elbows slightly flexed & see the ball into hands)
  • Bring the knee thats away from the goal up for protection and provent from being pushed into the goal

Punch the ball is needed

  • Height, distance & width
  • 2 fisted or 1 fisted through the bottom and in middle of the ball
  • Recovery lines to defend the goal
