Phase 1

Topic: Passing and Receiving

Activity: Straight line passing

Set Up: 

  • Cones 5 yards apart
  • Players 3-5 yards apart
  • 1 touch passing back and forth
  • A-B-A-B
  • 3 mins

Instructions:

  • Play right foot and left foot in sequence if possible

Main Technical Coaching Points/Questions

  • Toe up, heel down, ankle locked
  • Plant foot width of foot away from the ball, next to it if the ball is not moving, slightly in front if moving away from you. Plant foot pointed towards the target
Communication:

  • Verbal
  • Feet, Yes, Ball, Use names: Ex: Piper, feet!
  • Non-verbal
  • Eye contact
  • Hand signals
  • Show with hands exactly where the ball needs to be played

  • Weight of pass

Phase 2

Set Up: 

  • Cones 5 yards apart
  • Players 3-5 yards apart
  • 1 and 2 touch passing back and forth
  • 1-2-1-3 passing rotation
  • 3 mins each

Instructions:

  • A and B pass back and forth 2 times
  • A moves to 2 and receives a pass with their right foot
  • A moves back to 1 and receives 1 touch pass with L foot
  • A moves to 3 and receives a pass with their L foot
  • A moves back to 1 and plays a 3 pass sequence with B who then repeats what A did
  • Repeat but go 2 touch on outside

Phase 3

Set Up: 

  • Cones 5 yards apart

  • 1-2-1-3 passing rotation

Instructions:

  • A and B pass back and forth 2 times
  • A moves to 2 and receives a pass with their right foot takes across body/cone and plays with left
  • A moves back to 1 and receives 1 touch pass with L foot
  • A moves to 3 and receives a pass with their L foot takes across body/cone and plays with right foot
  • A moves back to 1 and plays a 3 pass sequence with B who then repeats what A did
  • Repeat above but use outside left at station 1 and inside L and opposite at station 3 using right foot

Phase 4

Set Up: 

  • Cones 5 yards apart
  • Players 3-5 yards apart
  • 1 and 2 touch passing back and forth
  • 1-2-1-3 passing rotation

Instructions:

  • A and B pass back and forth 2 times
  • A moves to 2 and receives a pass with their right foot, performs step over and back to the right and passes with right
  • A moves back to 1 and receives 1 touch pass with L foot
  • A moves to 3 and receives a pass with their L foot performs step over and back to the left and passes with left
  • A moves back to 1 and plays a 3 pass sequence with B who then repeats what A did

Phase 5

Set Up: 

  • 3v1 possession (Players play 1 and 2 touch)
  • Keep space small but do not limit to a coned area

Instructions:

  • Keep the ball away from the middle player/red as long as possible
  • 1 min games and then switch middle player.
  • 5 passes equals a goal = 2 push ups for middle player
  • 5 interceptions = 2 push ups for outside player
