Session Introduction

Session - Find/creating the open player

Group Discussion

What is an open player? (When a player can receive the ball without pressure and has time on the ball to make the next action (turn/dribble/pass/shoot)

The fundamental concept of our possession based style of play is to find/create the open player, preferably behind the oppositions line of pressure...

How can we find an open player? (Naturally through different formations, for example a midfield diamond vs a midfield 3 or by individuals finding space/losing their opponent)

If we can't find an open player we need to create one, how? (By attracting opposition players to the ball to free up teammates)

If possible, where would we like to find/create the open player? (Behind the oppositions line of pressure so we can eliminate oppostion players from the game)

Introducing The Concept (20 mins)

After their warm up (pulse raiser/dynamics/light ball work) the group will split into two groups. There will be two practices, each practise works on key individual concepts relating to finding/creating the open player. Each group will work on a specific practise for 10-12 minutes before swapping over.

Practise 1 - Finding the open player.

Practise 2 - Losing your marker to become/create the open player.

Equipment

* Supply of balls, mini goals, cones, disk markers, traffic cones, bibs, visual aid, whistle, stopwatch.

Coaching Points

Practise 1 (Finding the open player)

* Decison making - pass/dribble/shoot. Why?

* Accuracy, weight, disguise of pass.

* 1v1 outplaying skills, change speed/direction.

* Teammates positioning/movement to create space to receive or create space for ball possesor to travel into.

* Ball possesors ability to attract pressure to the ball and create the open player.

Practise 2 (Losing your marker to become/create the open player)

* Dis-marking skills - double movements/positioning/body fakes/feints.

* 1v1 outplaying skills under pressure - body position/use of body to protect the ball/using opponents momentum, skills/fakes/feints/turns.

* Awareness - checking/scanning shoulder/feeling opponent for angle of pressure.

Multi-Directional Game

Organisation/Set-Up

* 3v3 in the middle, with four target players on the outside who act as CB/CFs.

* Aim for the team in possession is to transfer play from one side of the pitch to the other by finding/creating the open player in the middle.

* A team gets 1 point for transfering the ball from one side to the other and back again. Team with the most points at the end of each block win.

* The practise will be split into 3 x 6 blocks.

Equipment

* Supply of balls, disk markers, bibs, visual aid, whistle, stopwatch.

Blocks

Block 1 - Magic man in the middle to naturally create a 4v3 overload, making it easier to find the open player.

Block 2 - Magic man removed so there's no longer a natural overload. Emphasis now on middle players ability to lose their opponents and create themselves as the open player. CBs can now also step in to create 4v3 overload.

Block 3 - Emphasis now more on collective. Rotation of middle players to create open player and end players stepping in with the ball to attract pressure create the open player.

Coaching Points/Challenges

Ball Possesor

* Are you able to find the open player?

* If not, are you able to attract pressure on the ball and create the open player? How?

Potential Receiver

* Are you able to receive the ball in a position to play forwards? Why?

* If not, are you able to lose/distance yourself from your marker?

* Are you able to create space for a teammate to travel into?

Organisation/Set-Up

* 7v7 SSG set-up as seen above.

* Zones are only rough guidlines this week, players are not locked in, just zones are just there to give players things to think about and plant seeds with regards to shape/support etc.

* The plan for the next session would be to introduce the players to the third man concept where a more structured version of this SSG will help further develop their understanding of finding/creating the open player.

Coaching Points

* Lots of free play.

* Set individual challenges based on session topic/IDPs/what we see in the session.
