2009G - Through balls - 3/23/21
Objectives:
- Have players recognize cues and triggers to play pass/make run in behind for a through ball
- Have players be able to execute through ball with proper weight of pass
- Players are brave in their runs behind, even if they don't get the ball

Start with Rondos as an intro activity (10-15 mins)
Then get players into 2 areas like set up like above
- Start with straight pass, diagonal run
- Then go to diagonal pass, straight run
- Finish in the goal
- Switch lines after going
- Rotate GK's intermittently
- Movement off the ball when seeing trigger for through ball
Coaching points:
- Straight ball, diagonal run
- Diagonal ball, straight run
- Timing run to stay onside (bent run)
- Weight of pass for attacker to get onto it
- Using all space to have time and space to play through ball
Progression(s):
- 4v2 Rondo, must play through ball to get out
- 4 passes, then through ball onto goal
- If attackers can get 4 passes and score, 1 point
- If defenders win the ball, the attempt to score in the two counter goals
- Defenders can defend if the through ball goes out
- Rotate defenders and attackers

- 5 players - 2-2-1 (4,5,8,8,9)
- Teams attempt to get 3 passes and then play a through ball
- Normal game until a goal is scored or goes out of play
- Then restarts in the middle
- N play with team CONTROLLING the ball
Coaching points:
- If the ball is played wide, expect through ball
- If a player is able to face forward, expect through ball
- Making runs that stay onside as the ball is kicked

Teams must defend in FRONT of their shaded zone
- If ball is played behind them into shaded zone, then can then defend that zone
- When in attack and possession, team can go anywhere
- Offsides is active
- Team of 8 are down 0-1, and need to win the game to achieve their objective
Coaching points:
- What are the triggers that tell the passer to play the ball in behind?
- What kind of pass triggers what kind of run?
- What is the passers job once they play a through ball into space?
- Can there be more than 1 run from a through ball?

- Normal game, look for through balls/runs
